Holiday

I have read several reviews about the Holiday and the complaints seem pretty consistant. What is Carnival management doing to correct these issue on the Holiday. I have booked a group cruise next year and hope these issues will be resovled. Thanks.

The water in the bathroom sink was brown colored for the first few minutes it was running. Our sink didn't drain very well and I ended up just taking the plug out altogether and leaving it on the back of the sink. The bathroom didn't have very much storage - I ended up putting my toiletries in the closet directly across from it. The worst part was that there was a terrible odor (like sewage) in the bathroom on several occasions. We tried putting a hand towel over the floor drain but unsure if it really helped or was coincidental

We only had the brown water a couple of mornings, but it did not take but a minute of running the water for it to clear up. I guess the only complaint that I had was that if you were in the shower, the water would sometimes just stop running. I guess too many people were trying to shower at the same time

My cruise from Mobile

My wife and I have been on several cruises on more upscale and larger vessels over the past years. Consequently, we didn't think we would enjoy the Holiday even though we live in Mobile and it would be very convenient.

We finally decided to book the 4 day cruise leaving Mobile on Jan. 24th. just to get away for a few days. Our expections were not very high but we were pleasantly surprised. The crew was nice and courteous and very attentive to our  requests and wishes. The food was good and the entertainment was adequate even though one show had to be cancelled due to sickness. The facilities were more than we expected .We met some very nice people with whom we will stay in contact with after the cruise.

This was the cruise in which about 150 people including the crew members came down with a virus. I listened to the news reports relative to the spreading of the virus and I basically disagree with the  reports. I found the ship to be clean and the staff was continually cleaning both the staterooms and the public areas. If someone brings the virus aboard, I don't know how the cruise line could have prevented it. It is the responsibility of the guests in my opinion. We did take normal common sense precautions such as using a hand sanitizer frequently.

We were impressed enough that we plan to book another cruise late summer with my and my brothers family for our annual family reunion. We normally rent a house at Gulf Shores, but this is about the same amount of money and no one has to cook or clean or do all the chores.

 B.W.K.

Back to Back on the Holiday Dec. 27 and Dec. 31

My wife and I have cruised twice on the Celebration, and it is by far our favorite ship. When we had the opportunity to do a b-2-b on the Holiday, we felt like it would be heavenly experience, but instead it proved to be the cruise to Hell (and I don't mean the Hell in the Caymans..)

This was our sixth and seventh Carnival Cruises, with two on the Celebration, one on the Fantasy, while Conquest and Glory finished out our earlier cruises. We knew the Holiday was the twin to the Celebration, so we had no grand expectations and looked forward to being on a small ship where we always have found personal service and better service on the smaller ships so actually enjoyed them better.

Like others have said, Carnival can not control the weather or people getting sick on board (although it appears Carnival might have some fault for one of the illnesses on the first trip.)

Still, I appreciate the concern that a ship would turn around to return a sick passenger to shore where they can get the medical help they need, so  I will be the last to complain that the ship had to return to port twice for ill passengers.

My major complaint (and this is true for conditions on both trips) is the failure of the staff to alert passengers to the conditions. It was only at the Captains welcome aboard reception that we were told of the sick passengers. We were giving very little information and only told we would be late arriving in Cozumel. In fact, we were left with the impression we would still arrive around noon and have plenty of time for fun. Instead, suddenly when we making preparations for Cozumel, that suddenly we were infomred we were running even later then expected, and hoped to arrive around 2:00. At 3:00 (no further announcements weree made) we saw Cozumel appear and finally were at the pier and ready to disembark at 4:00.

I hold the Cruise Diector Steve Cassell responsible. I also feel the Captain was negligent in this matter also. Information is key, and not informitng the guests of conditions, times or arrival and other information that might assist them in preparing for the day was totally improper.

Also, no extra activiities were planned and the day became a sea day were the entertainment staff did nothing. BTW, to the poster who complained about all the Beatles music, we still have Christmas music on the Lido on the first trip (since we left of Dec. 27) and I think they only had about two CD's of Christmas music.

The one thing I enjoyed that was unexpected was getting to shop in Cozumel in the evening when the other ships weree preparing to pull out. We had the stores to ourselves and the full interest of the shop owners. Also, Cozumel was still decorated for Christmas, so we got to see some wonderful decorations in town.

I really felt sorry for people who had travelled expecting a fun day at the beach in Cozumel, and instead had to settle for shopping because the sun would have been setting by the time they arrived at the beach. Kids missed swimming with the dolphins and almost all shore excursions were cancelled.

I can not hold Carnival completely responsibile but still feel if we had been advised what was going in people could have prepared better. Also, to the folks who compained about only receiving $25 for missing Cozumel the next trip, we got NOTHING for a trip where you could not swim, sun, or do anything except shop. We never even got an apology.

We were told we would arrive in Mobile about 8:00, so we could sleep in. For us it was no problem because were just going to go off the ship, through customs and then right back on (and be escorted by someone from the Pursors office.) The night before I checked in and asked about the weather in Mobile. No one could answer and said they had not gotten a weather report from the Bridge. I heard this several times when I asked about the weather over the two weeks.

I went to bed and woke up at 7:30 and laid in bed thinking the ship sure was still moving a lot for being close to shore. Then we were told the fog was neavy, and the pilot had not been able to get to the ship because of the fog. He had just arrived, and now we would arrive at the pier around 10:00 instead. Again, trying to make the best of it, I went to the lido, had a nice casual breakfast, and enjoyed watching as we came into the harbor. Normally you would not see this because normally it is early in the morning. It was very cold and we needed our jackets. I had a feeling it would be cold because I had watched the weather channell on TV and seen it was cold in the south, but they did not have accuate information on Mobile.

I grew interested in the people waiting for the next cruise, because I knew there is only enough parking for one cruise at a time. Normally people are off the ship by 10:00 and our ot the parking lot in time for the next cruisers to start arriving. As we passed the Terminal (and I wondered why we did not dock directly instead of taking over 40 minutes to go upstream and come back sine many had planes to catch) we saw a train stopped in front of the terminal. We later found out it had broken down that morning, which kept many workers from getting into the terrmial, but helped keep the next cruisers out of the way. They were shuttled to a parking area under the I-10 Bridge and kept their until we started disembarking. It was about noon when the first passengers finally got off. Some of the very irate guests had parked out in the Pursors lobby, and had to be removed so customs could set up in there. It was pretty bad, but finally people were able to get off.

Again, I feel part of the problem was no communication from the Bridge. Please keep us up to date. Instead, the Cruise Director seemed to take the day off and the only communication was from the assistant. The only thing they did was pipe in a movie to the theater so people could sit with their luggage and wait. The movie ended long before we made port.

Finally, everyone was off, and we did our trip to shore and got back on along with two wedding parties who married at 2:00 and 2:30. We enjoyed our lunch and watched the activiity on shore. I will say for being so late getting in, the crew did a great job getting ready for the next trip. While being four hours late getting to port, we were only two hours late leaving, as we pullled out at 6:00.

Later we would learn that part of the reason Mobile was so cold, was because a huge Arctic front had come through, and it was causing havoc in the Gulf. Unfortnatley, again no information was provided by the Bridge. The infamous "Barf Bags" suddenly appeared, and we realized that meant bad travel ahead. Again, it was at the Captains Welcome aboard reception we got any information and were sailing into a cold front and we would see some rough weather ahead. We learned we were seeing high waves (later I would learn up to 12 foot waves, but not from ship crew, but from passengers on other Carnival ships who did have crews who gave out information.)

the night before I again asked the Pursors deck for weather information, because I knew we were scheduled to tender in. I was told, sorry, no infom from the bridge. I checked out the weather channel again, and found a world wide forecast, and saw it did not look good for Cozumel.

The next morning, we watched as we cruised up to the port, and suddenly stopped. I thought this was a good sign, and then message said we would not be able to tender in as the port was closed to small ships. I had checked in advance, and knew there were nine ships scheduld for Cozumel, and the Holiday was to tender in, so I knew that meant Cozumel was gone. The the ship cranked up and started down the shore. I knew that with Costa Maya gone, there was no hope of getting in there and we saw a ship docked in Calica so we could not reverse ports. Progresso and Belize were too far to go, so I knew it meant an "Fun Day at Sea."

I wondered what the Cruise director would have up his sleeve.I found out he must be an honest poker player because he had nothing. A special Art Aution was held, and some games of Bingo. The Casino staff was wakened and sent to work. A movie was played in the theater. In other words, again nothing was done.

The situation was made worse because it was pretty cold with no sun, the pool was shut down, lounge chairs were stowed away and there was nothing to do for most people. They could have opened the disco and bars, they could have had the Dancers pull out their Christmas show, they could have found some type of entertainment.

We cruiised up and down the coast, with the ship making a 45-75 degree evry so often as we did our U-turn. We were in the art auction and received a warning from the bridge one time about the list, but did not other times. This was the most miseralbe day I havew ever spent cruising. I try to remind myself it would have been worse to be in the open sea, but I also notice that none of the other five ships who were turned away from Cozumel were doing this.

To make matters worse, the Comic who had entertained for two nights was supposed to get off at Cozumel and another entertainer join the ship. Steve Cassell in his ultimate wisdom then decided to hold the "Talent Show" a day early. This might be the best decision he made in the nine days I was on board. For one thing, we had one of the best talent shows I have ever seen (BTW, I was Frank Sinatra) and we had some amazing talent including a real Belly Dancer, a woman who could set up shop in Las Vegas, a country singer who has recorded, and some other incredibe talent. I was humbled to be in that bunch and it was great. Amazingly enought, Steve Cassell did not even come to meet the cast and was down right rude to sevarl who performed.

The next day was arrived at Calica. No, it is not an amazing port and yes it is a rock port. But, yes, when you leave the ship there are some very exciting places to visit. I agre with another poster, however, where is X-Carret? Why does Carnival not go there any more?

The reeal good thing is the weather cleared up a bit for Calica, and we actually even saw the sun shine!

We left Calica but the next day again it was wet can cold. The only thing that made it feel good was hearing it had dropped to 25 in Mobile while we were gone. Maybe 50 degrees was not so bad after all.

Again, activities would have been nice there was not much to do.Thank goodness I love my art auctions.

I am glad I am an experienced Carnival Cruiser. I tried another Cruise line one time, and could not wait to get back to my Carnival (yes, I bought the stock to get the onboard credit so I can refer to it as MY Carnival.)

Was I disappointed in the cruise. Yes.

Will I be back...YES, and  I know it will be better.

thanks...

Jimmy.

Family trip 1/05/08 - 1/10-08

After reading some of the other posts regarding the Holiday, I am not sure that we were all on the same ship.  My husband and I and our family (10 of us in all) including our 1 year old grandson, had a great time.  We found it very organized during parking, unloading luggage, sign-in, and debarkation.  Immediately upon boarding, we went to the Lido deck and enjoyed lunch and then went to our staterooms.  No delays or problems.  Luggage was delivered within an hour.

We enjoyed the shows and the meals.  We had wonderful waiters in the Seven Seas restaurant and our room stewards were great.  The maite' d did come by our table each night and spoke to us and made sure we were having fun and that everything was good.  Everyone we encountered was very friendly and helpful.  I am not usually one that sleeps well away from home, but I found that I was very comfortable and slept very well each night.  They provided a crib for our grandson, and a roll out for our daughter that shared our cabin with us.

One of the best things about this cruise was the cruise director, Steve Cassell, and the social hosts, Byron and Matt as well as Jaque' the assistant cruise director ( he is South African, very cute, and has a very sexy accent).  They made all activities fun and made everyone feel like participating.  They were very funny and had great personalities.  Steve Cassell, the CD, is an exceptionally talented man.  He played the fiddle ( during the country show), played the violin (during the guest talent show) and even juggled one evening during the variety show.  He is also very very funny and is suited perfectly for this job.  He is extremely knowledgeable about the ports and the excursions.

We had good encounters with the pursers staff.  They were very helpful with booking an excursion and even gave information about an activity that was not related to what they offered.

My father-in-law is a very picky eater and managed to find something that he would eat at each meal - whether it was pizza or a hamburger we managed to keep him from starving.    I do agree with the earlier comment about the soft drinks.  Our family doesn't drink alcohol, but we do like soft drinks.  It would be very nice if you didn't have to pay so much for them.  $1.75 is a bit much for a Diet Coke, but $2.25 is crazy for a bottle of water.  However, there is so much included in the price of your cruise, that I guess they have to make their money back on the extras. I will say that the lemonade on the Lido Deck is really good.  They just need to add a little caffeine.

As far as weather is concerned, we had great weather for the whole trip.  It was a bit chilly leaving Mobile, but we left snow back home, so it wasn't too bad.  By 10:00 pm the first night, the temperature had warmed up to around 65 degrees.  The rest of the week was like summer around 85 degrees.  We had beautiful weather in Progresso and in Cozumel.  The night sailing into Cozumel was a bit rough, but not enough to make you sick.  Cozumel is a beautiful tourist town.  However, Progresso is extremely poor and in some places dirty.  But it was extremely interesting.  We took the Flamingo Tour that was offered at the place where the shuttle bus stops.  We saw some of the Mayan Ruins, flamingos, and a lot of the town.  Our little tour guide, Jasmine, was a doll and was very interesting.  We enjoyed it and learned a lot.

We must have gotten lucky on Cozumel day because we were docked at the pier.  No tenders needed.  We just walked down the pier and into town and found us a taxi to take us to Paradise Beach.  It was beautiful.  HOT but beautiful.  But not as beautiful as Half Moon Cay.  My husband and I visited Half Moon Cay last year and it is the most beautiful place I have ever been.  If you are looking for another place to go, I strongly suggest Half Moon Cay.

The only trouble we had was on the last day when getting back to Mobile.  As per the other posting, we were delayed by fog.  We were supposed to dock at 8:00 am but due to extremely thick fog weren't able to until around 10:00 am.  This just allowed us a little more time to eat a leisurely breakfast and finish gathering the rest of our things.  We were finally able to get headed back around 12:40 pm.  Customs was not a big deal.  Our luggage was in the zone area and we just had to pick it up and get in line for customs.  We waited in the loading area with our bags while other members of our party went to get the vehicles and we were able to load without getting drenched.  It was pouring at that point.

All in all, we had a great time.  My husband and I were the only past cruisers in our party, but the rest of the gang had a ball.  There is a lot of stuff to keep the kids interested.  However, the kids that were with us were 17, 19, 20, 21, and 24, and a 1 year old who did great.  If they did get tired or a bit bored, they just took a nap.  Trust me, you will need a nap because you will get very tired.  Just keep up with your Carnival Capers (available at the Pursers desk if you lose it) and you will know everything that is going on and that is a lot of stuff.  Dance classes, Bingo, shows, parties, karaoke, internet cafe, library ( we found this a good place to play cards), and all kinds of entertainment in the different lounges.  The food is great.  The towel animals are always fun. Just remember to take a watch.  There are no clocks throughout the ship and we found ourselves asking about the time quite often.

Just keep in mind, everyone has a bad day now and then, and you cannot control the weather (especially in winter).  We had a ball and would definitely cruise on this ship again.  As far as the island shopping, good luck.  It is hit or miss.  You won't really know if you got a good deal until you see your purchase elsewhere.  But don't settle on the first price.  They will come down.  The places away from the pier are usually more willing to haggle.

Oh yeah, about the intercom, on our last cruise ( on the Fantasy) the announcements would come into the staterooms and all public areas.  But I found it a bit difficult to hear on the Holiday sometimes.  I found myself opening the door to my stateroom at times to be able to hear clearly.  But I will say that I couldn't understand the captain at all, regardless of how loud it was.  He has a very thick accent.

Holiday Cruise 12/31

I posted this already in a different spot but after reading the other entry about this particular cruise I wanted to put mine where it could easily be found.  I so much agree with everything that was said by the other cruiser posted two days ago.  Here is what I wrote on the 6th right after we got back.

Before I left for our trip this year, I vowed I would review all hotels and the cruise irregardless of whether it was a good experience or not. Before I start, I understand that weather cannot be controlled. It started with embarkation. The cruise was 4 hours late and all Carnival wanted to give to us for the chaos was $15 per person and we could not even get out to use it to get something to eat. We were crowded underneath this overpass in a big traffic jam. We finally got on the boat by evening and all was well (so we thought). The weather was cloudy and windy and the boat was really rough. I was disappointed in the boat itself as it was very plain--no glass elevators or fancy ammenities like I have seen on all the other boats. The first day at sea was ok just rough. The second day we were supposed to port at Cozumel but could not because the sea was too rough for the tenders to operate. It looks like to me there would be some kind of backup plan and actually find a dock to pull up to. So therefore that all added up to another day at rough sea. They gave us $25 a piece and that sounds good on paper but really that does not even come close to covering gratuities. No water in the pools--top deck too windy to go out on...etc. We did circles in the ocean up and down the coastline which was a real pain in the rear cause turning the boat was really rough. Once we even got sideways. We did get to port on the third day at Calica. Calica is such a nice name but the port itself is nothing but a dock amongst gravel and sand pits--absolutely not scenic!!! We had to pay $26 round trip cab fare to Playa del Carmen to shop. It was hit and miss as far as shady characters and shacks. The shopping was ok but it was no St. Maarten or Nassau. Back on the boat--still cloudy and cool. After setting sail, the water was rough once again. Our last day was a sea day and it was still rough once again. Nothing much to do unless you like indoor games. I personally like to drink by the pool and lay out in the sun. On the last day I was cleaning our room up praying for the day to go by quickly so we could end this vacation. I picked up some clothes and low and behold a gigantic cockroach came running out. That was the topper on the cake. The only bright side of this cruise was the crew and the food. The crew was very friendly and the food was always good. I am still amazed at why you pay sooooo much for these cruises and you still have to pay out for softdrinks and video games--things that really would not cost them that much money to include. Anyway they can make a buck, they will. I may cruise Carnival again but it will be on a bigger, nicer, newer boat that does not go to Calica!!!!!!

Holiday 12/31/07 - 1/5/08

I based my expectations for the Holiday cruise on a previous Carnival cruise aboard the Fantasy.  I was aware that the ship was smaller, older, and not quite as glamorous. My pre-cruise research left me with the impression that what the Holiday lacked in glamour and size, it made up for in attitude, intimacy and activities.  I have attempted to highlight positive and negative elements of the trip, but unfortunately, I believe we must have experienced a ‘when it rains it pours’ kind of situation.  As in any situation, isolated events are easy enough to dismiss, but an accumulation of events tend to turn into a snowball, where every mishap starts to glare at you. I have tried to separate events and treat them individually, but it is still part of our perception of the vacation as a whole.

Our family of eight traveled from Northwest Arkansas on December 30, 2007 to Mobile, AL. We stayed at the Radisson Admiral Semmes Hotel. The Holiday was late arriving in port 12/31/07 due to fog.  The hotel began shuttling guests to the terminal shortly after 1 p.m.  Baggage handlers at the terminal were a little disorganized and rushed (understandably), but were very friendly and upbeat. Check-in went smoothly and again the staff was friendly and enthusiastic.

Upon boarding the ship we were told our rooms would be ready in about 15 minutes, so we went to the Lido deck to wait. The atmosphere here was a little different. The staff seemed rushed and tense (again, understandable).  During the ride to the terminal, the driver (who was a hotel manager; because of the rush caused by the delay, the hotel shuttled some people in private vehicles) mentioned that the ship staff would typically have a few hours ashore, but in this case would not. We then learned that our rooms would not be ready for another 30-45 minutes. I saw guests looking at the day’s Carnival Capers (a listing of the evening’s events and activities), so I tried several times to get one. Unfortunately, the staff either did not know where to get one or said they were in the rooms already.  Free champagne was offered to guests while we waited for rooms. There was no announcement when rooms were ready. We went to our rooms when word-of-mouth by other guests reached us. Guests were given a $15 credit to their sign and sail account as concession for the delay and subsequent rush, although I was not aware of this until several days later when it was mentioned by another guest.

The rest of the evening was fairly uneventful. We did not go to the dining room for our (reserved for 6:15)  because we did not have time to dress and needed to attend the required safety drill. We set sail during the drill. We then spent most of the evening on the Lido deck. I noticed service was not at the same level as our previous cruise. Early in the evening the public bathrooms were in serious need of cleaning and maintenance. The ladies bathroom was in disarray, had clogged stalls and the soap dispenser had been knocked off, resulting in puddle of liquid soap covering the counter and dripping onto the floor.  At midnight this had not changed. Apparently the men’s restroom smelled so strongly of urine that men were joking about taking deep breaths before going in.

Around 10:30 p.m. waiters began selling bottles of champagne to celebrate the New Year, New York time. A large video screen rolled to display Time Square and the countdown. Some guests were confused as to why we were celebrating on Eastern Standard Time, since we were on Central Time. One waiter answered that it was because that was the official time recognized for the New Year.  Guest joined in the New York City countdown, but it was awkward, since we were an hour behind. Some guests thought that that was it; that was our New Year celebration. I later concluded it was a way to sell bottles of champagne, since free champagne was later offered as we approached midnight Central Time.  Fortunately, we did celebrate (again) Central Time, and it was an enjoyable, festive mood.

The next day I noticed that the onboard television was not airing the video that is typically taken from the moment guest begin boarding. On the previous cruise, video was taken as guests wondered around the ship and participated in activities.  Video of the ship’s shows and talks was also aired shortly after it was taken. Such a practice is a nice touch as it gets you involved in the activity on the ship and helps create a more intimate atmosphere. Unfortunately, the Holiday did not show guest video (at least that I saw, and I checked regularly) until the morning we returned, at which time they aired video taken New Year’s Eve, 5 days earlier. Regarding onboard TV, on Friday they were still airing a talk made on Monday about shopping and activities in Cozumel (which we did not get to visit).

By this time we, and most other guests, noticed that the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff was definitely lacking.  Most staff did not smile or acknowledge you. Answers to questions were short and tense.  Later in the day we asked about changing the music on the lido deck (the same early Beatles CD had played continuously for hours).  We were told they only had five CDs to choose from. Finding this hard to believe, I finally asked two security officers who or where I would go to ask about the music. They told me they didn’t get involved. I told them I wasn’t asking them to get involved, I was just asking for instructions on where to go. They said they would see what they could do. Eventually I went to the purser’s desk and offered some of our own blues CDs. At that time they did change the music.

Problems with the plumbing system became apparent this day. The main deck (where part of our family was) had a sewage smell that remained the rest of the cruise. Wet spots in the hallways were continually appearing where plumbing was backing up. On the third day the upper deck (where we were) started to smell, but this was addressed fairly quickly and was not noted again. Several public restrooms on the ship were closed due to plumbing problems.

Formal night (second night) was nice, but again the staff seemed tense and stand-offish. Because it was an early setting, we were rushed through desert so they could get ready for the second setting. The food was adequate, but not exceptional. Beverage service was slow. Of the three nights we ate in the dining room, photographs were taken upon leaving the dining room on two nights. Generally, photos are taken with a costumed character at each dinner setting, hopefully before dinner, when dress (and makeup) is still ‘fresh.’  One thing I missed on this cruise was the appearance of the matrie‘d at dinner table.  Last cruise the matrie’d made a brief appearance to each table to greet guests.

I noticed this also regarding the captain. I only heard the captain address guests via the intercom on the last night of the cruise and never saw him among guests.  Though in fairness, he may have spoke before the last night – the intercom system is impossible to hear unless you are in a hallway. It does not feed into private rooms or most public rooms. It does feed onto the open decks, but the music is not turned down, so announcements are drowned out.  The problem with the intercom system, however, was apparent on the last cruise also. Seas were rough this night, making sleep very difficult. Vibration and continuous banging noise in the cabin made it even worse. The evening show was cancelled due to ship movement.

The third day was to be Cozumel day, but the port was closed to small vessels. The Holiday was to tender guests to shore, so we had to remain onboard. Other ships were in the port, presumably debarking directly to cruise piers.  Unfortunately, we spent the day cruising up and down the coastline. The port cancellation was no fault of Carnival (unless it was decided that the larger ships with more guests would be the ones to use the cruise piers), but it certainly put a damper on an already strained mood. The Holiday could have adjusted activities to try an improve this, but guests were pretty much left to themselves and few activities such as bingo and classes. A $25 credit per guest was applied to our sign and sail account. The Lido deck cycled the same early Beatles CD again for hours until several people once again complained. A live DJ and maybe some poolside games (like they would later do), would have gone a long way in improving the group mood. As it was, staff seemed even more irritated and unfriendly than before. I’ve since learned that the cruise just before us was unable to port in Cozumel also, so the staff would now have been stuck on the ship for over a week. Such tension was more than apparent at this point.  All eight members of our family experienced several not-so-pleasant exchanges with staff members, some of which are actually rude. I eventually started to make notes about the exchanges (which I won’t include here). During the first turnaround the ship made while cruising the coast the entire contents of the pool flooded the starboard side of the deck. Guests against the far wall where literally knee-deep in water.

Later that evening I had an issue I felt should be addressed at that time.  Our waiter had reverted back to charging us full price for Carnival drinks (refills were $2 less).  He said we had to turn in our souvenir cup to get the refill price. He had been serving us refill prices for two days, and we did not always have our souvenir cup with us. Where he had been pleasant before, it seemed as if he suddenly changed on us. Considering the unpleasant encounters we had all experienced that day, I felt I should speak to someone. I went to the purser’s desk and voiced my concern. He told me that the refill policy was the rule, and that I should appreciate the fact that I had been allowed a leniency that other passengers had not. My primary complaint was the attitude of the staff, but I believe this was lost on him. I left the desk feeling my concerns were dismissed. I plate of chocolate covered strawberries were sent to my room the following day. This is apparently a standard response to complaints.

That night around 11 p.m. my son found an 8-year-old lost child in the hallway.  We finally connected to the right people, and we were told security arrive shortly.  After 30 minutes, one security officer arrived. A few minutes later another arrived.  Fortunately, the boy knew full names of his family and we found the parent’s cabin. (The boy was sharing a cabin with his older brother and got locked out when he left to find his mother). Sleep was again difficult primarily because of cabin noise.

The following day was Calcia. Announcements the night before indicated that upon arrival, port authorities would board the ship and clear us to debark. Unfortunately, there was never an announcement after arrival. It was only when we saw other guests going ashore from our stateroom window that we preceded. We visited Xcaret and it was wonderful. Oddly enough, Holiday no longer offers online purchase of this excursion prior to sailing. We asked about this and were told it can only be purchased onboard. Fearing a sell-out, we purchased these tickets independently. When we boarded the ship, I noticed there was no literature, mention or promotion of, or even a purchase option for Xcaret. I asked if the park was operating and I was told that Holiday did not offer this excursion. Since I didn't ask if they offered it, I asked my question again and was told that if I wanted to do that I could take a cab and would be on my own. I thought it strange that Holiday would chose not to provide any information or even mention such an incredible, world- renowned park, especially since it is a stone's throw from the ship.

This evening was again fairly uneventful. The main pool was closed and there were no waiters on the Lido deck that evening, at least while we were there (about 5 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.) We decided to go in the hot tub. The port side hot tub had been closed for nearly all of the trip, so the starboard tub was often very full.  There seemed to be room, so we went to the upper deck. The water, however, was cloudy and discolored, in serious need of changing.

Our last day at sea we did a few of the activities. Music on the Lido deck was finally what you might expect for a Caribbean cruise, more upbeat and varied. Oddly enough, spirits seemed to be a little brighter, maybe because the staff would finally set foot on land. We ate in the dining room and stopped for a drink before going in. The live music was, well, nearly painful, and service was again slow.  Dinner was pleasant, though the food had room for improvement. We caught the adult comedy show, and I must say that was the highlight of the trip. The comedian was awesome.  Unfortunately, during the entire show we never once saw a waiter.  Sleep this night was most difficult due to movement and cabin noise/vibration. I managed about 1.5 hours at best.

In summary, we were disappointed in the vacation. Some things were in no way the fault of Carnival. There was no sunshine for the entire five days, it was cold and windy, fog prevented a timely departure and seas prevented or visit to Cozumel.  Other things, however, were under Carnival’s control.  Since the prior cruise had not docked in Cozumel, it seems reasonable that the crew would be aware of the possibility that this cruise might experience the same, especially given their knowledge of weather and sea conditions. An alternate schedule for the day would have likely lifted spirits of both staff and guests instead of creating even more tension. I firmly believe that many of the ‘complaints’ would have been over-looked had the staff had a positive and friendly attitude.  Unfortunately, this seemed to set the mood for the entire voyage. I must say, however, the housekeeping staff and our room steward were also pleasant and enjoyable. We actually had more fun interacting with them than anyone else on the ship.

As I stated earlier, it seems unlikely that our experience reflects the standard aboard this ship, both in the past and currently. There seem to be some issues, however, that should be addressed. A crew can certainly suffer from low moral from time to time. This may be such a period.  I will probably continue to cruise Carnival, but I will likely avoid this ship until I see evidence that some of these issues have been resolved.  It is worth noting that the review for the cruise preceding this one mentions nearly identical concerns.  I sincerely hope management listens and takes steps to correct these perceptions.

December 27-31 2007 Issues

This was my fifth cruise and my second on Carnival. My wife and I wanted some sun and fun and our cruise turned in to no sleep and no on shore experience.  Our cabin was on the main deck in the rear of the ship.  This was a 4 day cruise. We boarded without issue and had dinner in the dining room the first night; we thought things were going to be great. At about 1:00am the first night we were awakened by loud banging and vibration. These noises lasted until 5:00am. We got up at about 8:00am and found that it was cold outside and we had not made it very far from port. It seems there were two medical emergencies during the night and the ship had turned back twice, so we had not made it very far. We were informed about the emergencies and told we were running behind and would be late getting into our only stop, Cozumel. It seems that one of the emergencies was due to a woman that was not allowed to bring her oxygen on board by a porter in Mobile and they failed to load it on the ship. Later that day we had a bad experience with a very rude purser that treated us like we were convicts when we told her that someone stole one of our $22 Canrival towels from the pool area while we were inside eating. We watched the remainder of the trip and she treated all the guest the same way. The first day at sea there were no chairs laid out, they were all stacked up and we had to unstrapped them and move them to where we wanted to lay in the sun. The ship had two hot tubs and one was closed the entire trip while the other was used as a pool for the kids. No hot tub for adults. The announcements were impossible to here in your cabin and in many places throughout the ship. By the time it got to our day in Cozumel we were scheduled to arrive at 8:00am in time for fun and sun, but due to the two turn backs we arrived at 3:30pm with only two hours before nightfall. Our entire day that we had planned was shot and we ended up shopping and eating Mexican food and drinking margaritas which we could have done in any city in the country. The last disaster was on the day we were to arrive back in Mobile, at 3:30am in the morning we were awakened again by loud noises and vibration until about 7:00am that morning. Needless to say we only got two good nights out of four of sleep. We were scheduled to arrive at 8:00am but due to fog in Mobile we did not get into port until 12:30pm, I am glad we were driving home and did not have to catch a flight. Late again! I would like to say that 99.9% of the crew was awesome and treated us very well. The shows were good and food was great. It just seems we got a little short changed on this trip.
