    What to plan for Nassau

We are going on the Pride on Nov 1st to Nassau and Freeport.

Here is what we are planning to do.

I and my 10-year old will go for a 3.5 hours Carnival Offered Catamaran Reef and Snorkeling adventure (adults $49, Child $39) whereas my wife and the little one will probably go for 1.5 Hours Carnival offered Glass Bottom Boat excursion (adults $35, Child $36).

In the extra time, we want to visit the paradise island (take a private cab) and see Atlantis casino (that should be free, right?). If there is still some time left in the evening, we want to hang out at the Straw market near the cruise port and do some shopping without risking the return time for the ship.

One issue is trying to meet up with my wife and younger son after our respective adventures to do the Atlantis visit together. Without the cell phones, in a new country, this may prove to be an impossible task.

I also wanted to do some Jet Skiing with my 10-year old but trying to pack too much will be stressful instead of being fun. What do you guys think of this plan?

Also, does it make any financial difference if I bought this Carnival excursions before leaving from home or once on board?

you'll have plenty of time to see the market after doing atlantis.  my wife and i took a cab to atlantis and paid the $35 per person for the "discover atlantis tour" to see "the dig" and the rest of the grounds, but to see portions of the grounds and the casino, you do NOT have to pay.  just to see the dig and the other pools, like the shark pool, stingray pool, etc.  cab will be about 8 people @ $4 per person each way.

you can take your cell phone and use it on the ship and on the island.  we had ours for emergencies as my parents and in laws were watching our son.  just call your cell phone provider beforehand.

When you get to Freeport, take a cab to Lucaya Beach $5 per person each way and you can rent Jet Ski's at the beach.  Not sure how much, but I know you can do it.

It makes no difference if you book online early or if you book on the ship from a cost standpoint.  But some excursions do sell out VERY quickly and if you have your heart set on something, it will save you time, because one of the longest lines, especially in the departure day is the excursion desk.

Have a great time!  We did!

Straw market closes around 5 or 6 PM.  Not sure what time your excursion is or how long you are going to walk around Atlantis...u could spend hours there.  If you miss the straw market you are not missing much, alot of t-shirts and knock off purses.

Just as an aside.  I thought this was interesting.  We met a couple who had 3 children and what they did was book a room for a night at Atlantis to use the facilities (beach, slides, etc), as it was cheaper to do that than pay for 5 individual excursions.  I'm not sure how she worked that out because I thought that there was a minimum night stay for Atlantis.  I'm not even saying it's something you'd want to do, but I wanted to throw that out there to you as something you may want to mull over.  Not sure if it helps, but thought I'd throw it out there!

    Skifamily 2007 and Tracyanns,

you have both provided very useful information.

I will leave the JetSki experience for Freeport (very short time there..7 AM - 2 PM...we won't get out of ship until 9 AM with the kids..) The straw market time info changes my plan now. But I'd rather know about it now than after landing there.

     Thanks a bunch again.

Re: What to plan for Nassau

Cruise Curious, I am not sure how long you are in port but you may want to look into the Comfort Suite or that Atlantis and see how much the rooms are for the night.  As long as it is not a holiday you can book one night.  We got the Comfort Suites for our upcoming cruise for $231 after taxes and that is for all 4 of us.  This lets us use the waterpark, the pools, beach etc.  Also, not many people know this except those that have stayed at Atlantis but they have a number of water activities right there on property to do.  You guys could all go over there in the AM and your wife and younger one could play in the pools or go in the Not So Lazy River or the small waterpark areas for the kids and you and your son could Snorkel, Snuba or Walk in the Shark Tank right there on the property.

Just a thought, I know it is hard when you have 2 different ages and they aren't able to do or even want to do the same thing.  This would just be a way to keep your family together most of the day and you would know where to meet up and find them when you finished your activities.

Here is a link that shows you what is available right at Atlantis.  http://www.atlantis.com/thingstodo/wateradventures.aspx

Any questions, I can try to help you.  We have stayed at both properties and have been here a few times.

OK, how about this - you and the wife do your seperate excursions, you arrange to meet at the entrance to the shops at the pier (you'll see what I mean when you get there).  For that matter, she could get back on board and change, rest, eat lunch, whatever for the 2 hours you'll be gone or she could shop till she drops on Bay Street - once you meet back up, the straw market is only a couple blocks from where you'll be so swing by there (believe me, when you see the first few stands on the outer edge, you've seen them all) then just a quick walk back a few blocks, catch a cab and over you go to Atlantis.  It's not going to be as difficult as you seem to think it will be.  Even better if you bring cell phones with an international calling plan added temporarily - should only be around $5 per month for that and calls @ $.50 per minute.  Just DON'T use them on the ship!!  It's $2.49 per minute on board!

Are the Comfort Suites right in Atlantis?  Did you call or book online?  We're going in February and I'd like to book a room.

Comfort Suites is right next door to Atlantis...to the right of the property.  You can book online, it is Paradise Island Bahamas for the property location.

Re: What to plan for Nassau

Thank you all for your help. We had a nice cruise and we did fine at the ports of call. The input from fellow posters helped a lot in making it a fun experience.

Here is what we did at 3 ports:

    1. Port Canavera: Did nothing...stayed on the ship as was planned. I just walked out of the ship to see options to go to Cocoa Beach. They are offered at $5 each way per person.

    2. Nassau: All of us did the "Seaworld Explorer" excursion from Carnival. It was a good experience and we got to see marine life on the ocean floor at 3 different reefs in a decent Submarine boat. Spent about $176 for 2 adults and 2 kids. There is a 5 minute walk from the ship (the tour greeter meets you at the exit of the ship at 12:15 PM) to the boat that takes on a nice 15-20 minute ride to a place where Submarine is located. On the way, you get a nice commentary bu the guide (ours was very funny too) to the paradise island buildings and such. Total submarine time must be around 3--45 minutes but I didn't time it. The excursion ended at around 2:15 PM. We went straight to the straw Market shops (right across from the pier) and spent about 20-30 minutes for souvenir shopping. Very crowded place and bargaining is the way to go. After that we walked back into the ship for some food and cam back out around 4 PM. Took a taxi to Atlantis resort for $15 for 4 people. There are ferries to the paradise island too ($3 per person each way) but I was told that there is a bit of walking involved with this option if you are going to the Atlantis. Also, the last ferry back is at 6 PM. In our taxi, there was no one else and due to a bit of bargaining, I was able to get it for $15 total for 4 people with no toll charges to us. The Atlantis is awesome and we were able to see a good portion of the Acquarium (but don't know what we missed) and walk around the propoerty with some restrictions, go to casino etc. I found this to be enough with no money paid to Carnival or Atlantis. The return trip back at around 7:30 PM was easy with $4 per person rate and sharing the taxi with others.

    3. Freeport: We docked at around 7 AM but got out only at around 8:45 AM after family finished the breakfast at easy pace. The taxis there are easy to get and regulated at $5 per person for a ride to Lucaya beach. The ride is about 15-20 minutes but it is worth it. The shops at Lucays beach are "LOT" better than the crowded Straw Market in Nassau. The beach was awesome with clear waters and fine white sand. The only fee we paid was for the beach chair rental at $5 each. I did the Jet Ski rental with the kids. We got it through an agent on the beach. She sold it to me for $60 for 30 minute rental. The Jet Ski had 3 people space and for the first 15 minutes, I had both my sons with me (5 year old was in front of me and 10 year old behind me). I was the only one with shades and hence the little one in front requested to be dropped off after some time as salt water was burning his eyes. We used the Jet Ski for about 40 minutes or so and they never called us back. I just returned since I felt we did it for long enough time. This was very exhilirating experience. They have two rescue boats operating in the area and I felt safe at all times (otherwise i wouldn't risk my kids' lives). The beach time was awesome and provided for some excellent photo opportunities. After some more shopping, we got a taxi back (started at 12:15 PM) to the ship.

Please note that there is no check by anyone if you take the food out of the ship in Nassau or Freeport. Port canaveral is a different story though. They have strict policy and check for this.

Not knowing this before, we didn't take anything out for Nassau and Freeport.

All in all, very satisfied with how we used our time and port selections.

    Hope this helps.
