We are already doing an excusion in Cozumel (Nachi Cocum), and were thinking of maybe just doing our own thing in Progreso...if this safe?  If you have done it, what are some things we should do?  Any suggestions, comments would be greatly appreciated!!

It may be safe despite what I am about to say, unless you are very familiar with the area you shouldn't go off on your own.  Except for shopping near a port, private vendors are not always in tune with the ship's time for departure.  Other posters may have recommendations about vendors with whom they are familiar.

I would not be afraid to go on your own in Cozumel....I am not sure I would do it at Progreso.  They are two completely different places......Progreso is pretty undeveloped...... not at all like Cozumel.

The Progreso/Merida area is one of the safest areas in Mexico.  There is very little to no crime there.  If there is trouble, usually it is caused by an outsider to the area.  As long as you use the normal precautions you should not have any problems.  I have walked all over Progreso and downtown Merida and have never felt unsafe.

<>Keep in mind that the area is "true" Mexico and not commercialized like Cozumel.  I usually take the local bus to Merida for $3pp roundtrip.  The bus leaves every 15 minutes.
