    Galley Tour on the Glory

This was offered on our last cruise.  I got lots of answers to questions I wondered about but never asked.

ALL the food and beverages are purchased in the U.S.

Leftovers are ground up to about one millimeter and becomes fish food, with exception of some items (e.g., coffee, onion heads).

The food is loaded in 2-3 hours before the cruise in 4-hour window of time.  IF the loading is not completed in that 4 hour window they sail as is.  The officer told us that has never happened.

The crew does not eat the same food as the passengers because it is too rich (that it is!).

Storage of food is on 0 (Zero) deck and the water (potable, gray, and black waters) is used as ballast and is taken in and shifted as it is needed.

Galley inspections are conducted by staff on each cruise and an inspection and rating is given by the US Public Health 3 times a year.  The Glory is the only ship in the world to receive 100% rating each time.

This concludes today's contribution to Trivia Pursuit.

Re: Galley Tour on the Glory

All the galley tours we have taken have been free.  (Don't know where Patrick is, so I will answer for him!)

Patrick posted some interesting info - some of it we have never heard on a galley tour.  Evidently, each tour guide has their own version or maybe Patrick asked the right questions!

On some of the galley tours, they pass out a list of how much is consumed on a cruise - I will try to find one and post it.  It tells how many pounds of butter, flour, lobster, how many eggs, etc. are used for each cruise.

Been watching football.  The tour was free as indicated by Rufaeldawg.  This is a link to the fact sheets of each ship and the "tonnage" of food: http://carnivalpressroom.wordpress.com/press-kits-fact-sheets/

Re: Galley Tour on the Glory

thanks guys for the reply. Is there another type of tour of the ship they are charging for?

also, how many tours do they offer of the galley? The last time there was only a limited amount of people that could sign up for it. Of course I missed it.

Re: Galley Tour on the Glory

They now offer a Behind the Fun, behind the scenes tour of the ship for $95 and it is limited to a small group.  It tours the bridge and other areas where the public is not allowed.  It is not available on all ships yet.  Here's the link:

    http://www.carnival.com/CMS/Articles/behindthefun_2009.aspx

I have only seen "one" galley tour per cruise, and it us usually on the last sea day.  It is not offered on all cruises.  We took the galley tour on the Splendor (7 days); the first tour group was for Platinum guests and the published tour immediately follows for all guests.  As soon as we were walking through the exit door, the next group was going through the entrance door.  We took the galley tour on the Paradise in June (3 days) and it was only offered to Platinum guests.

That is some very interesting information with links to more about the ships.  It's a shame the fee for the galley tour is $95 as I would like to see what goes on behind the scenes but that's just a bit pricey.  Thanks, Patrick

As previously stated, the Galley Tour is free.  There is a fee for a different tour that is 3 1/2 hours long and it visits the Galley, Bridge (including photo's with the Captain) and tours other behind the scenes areas.

How does one go about getting the free Galley Tour?  I'd really like to see what that is all about.

Watch for the announcement in your Capers.  On our 7 day cruises, the tour was on the last sea day, and the info was published in the Capers which was delivered the night before.  On our 3 day cruise, we got an invitation which was sent to Platinum guests - it was not offered to other guests and there was no notice in the Capers.

You can also go to the Pursers' desk to ask if and when there will be a galley tour.

Re: Galley Tour on the Glory

In addtion to what Patrick wrote...

    Patrick:

Leftovers are ground up to about one millimeter and becomes fish food, with exception of some items (e.g., coffee, onion heads).

Approximately 15sq meters of food daily gets used as fish food.

    Patrick:

The crew does not eat the same food as the passengers because it is too rich (that it is!).

For most the dinner menu items this is true, but most of the other items are the same in the crew mess.  The officers mess is pretty much the same as the passengers, and the Captain has an entirely different menu in his diningroom!

    Patrick:
The Glory is the only ship in the world to receive 100% rating each time.
The Splendor just got her first 100% rating this past month!

Everyone has already posted that the galley tour is free and the "Behind the Fun" tour is what cost $95.  Having just taking this tour, it is worth it. (just make sure you have closed toe shoes)...  You wind up getting about $50 worth of gifts and photos.  The photos are usually delivered to your dinner table that night to make the other guest jealous that you got to see all the "Fun" stuff!.  If you haven't read the fact sheet on the "Behind the Fun" tour which explains what it does and where it goes, here is a brief recap...  1. You go backstage, and talk to the techinical engineer (lighting and sound) 2. You talk to the head dance instructor (who schedules all the dancers including flying in replacements if one gets sick, or short-term redoes the routines without them.  3. You see the crews quarters, the crew mess, the crew gym and their laundry area. 4. You see the main galley. 5. If there is a steakhouse on board you see that galley. 6. You see the Engine control room and get to ask the Engineer questions. 7. You see the food storage areas including the freezers. 8. You see the environmental area where they recycle everything. 9. You see the laundry, laundry storage, and drycleaning areas. 10. You also go to area where the ship's bell is and get a group photo there. 11. You go to the Bridge and talk to the Captain, and Engineer. You get two photos here, a group shot and individual shot with the Captain. 12. You see the morgue and the "jail".  13. You see the maintenance room. 14. You see the officer's diningroom, the Captain's diningroom. 15. You get at least three photos (with the Captain's signature), lanyard, backpack, hat, photobook, ship data sheet, pen(unless they run out), some goodies from the galley, we got a soap sculpture and some dual white and dark chocolate covered strawberries (delivered to our cabin). And some champagne, and juice.

It is 3 1/2 hours but it goes by very fast. And you can get any questions answered by any of the people along the way. It was quite informative.

Sage, thank you for clearing that up.  It sure looks like the "Behind the Scenes" is a very comprehensive tour of what happens on the Miracle that we all take for granted.  I may just consider it.

Where do you book this tour?  Do you have to wait until you get on the ship and book it through the excursion desk?
