I can't wait either!!!  It's going to be a long 3 months!  It's already turning cold here, so a week in the sun will be great!

ROLL CALL: JAN 10, 2010; HELP ME PICK :)

Big Smile We are excited about going to Roatan Island.  I've heard this is some of the best snorkeling there is.  My problem: picking one.  I've heard a lot of people talk about Tabayna Beach and how the snorkeling is right off shore, but I've been told you have to rent snorkel equipment-by the hour- and it usually runs out early. (we dont' own equipment to bring either and would rather not spend $$$ on buying it just for this stop)  Also I've been told the beach there is crowded.  But we are mainly looking at this stop as a snorkeling stop.

The other snorkeling we are looking at is Jolly Roger Cataraman.  Has anyone done this?  Is the area they take you to a good reef with lot's of fish/marinelife to see?  I know it comes with a tour of the nature park afterwards and that's a extra bonus, but we're mainly interested in snorkeling and this one sounds good as equipment is provided.  Anyone know how long you get to snorkel?

Any help and/or pictures would be great!!!  Last time we snorkeled it was at Grand Turk and was a total let down so we are hoping to see some real marine life and coral this time!

Re: ROLL CALL: JAN 10, 2010; HELP ME PICK :)

I've only been to roatan once before, and we snorkeled at Tabaynna (sp) and to tell you the truth, it was ok, but I've had better snorkeling in Belize at Goffs Caye...I'm going to be looking at a different excursion in Roatan this time...I know that reef here runs from cozumel on down through the entire area. I think it's just a matter of hitting a nicer area than others. I still loved it, and I can spend hours in the Caribbean crystal clear water! I've heard from some friends that Jolly Roger was good.

We are down to double digit count down now, YAY!! Big Smile

Yesterday Tony, Shelby and I went to the port of Tampa and watched the Legend leave port. They we went and had a picnic at Skyway park and waited for her to come...we watched her sail under the Skyway Bridge and off into the sunset. She's a beautiful ship, and I can't wait to get on her again...Is it January yet???

Re: ROLL CALL: JAN 10, 2010

I does seem a long way off, I needed this cruise yesterday!! Hopefully once the November hits, and the hustle and bustle of the holidays, the time will fly. I am a florist, so I usually start getting bussier in November and then we get into full Holiday swing and I don't have time to breathe let alone think about time...except knowing I have a cruise in Jan, may make it drag...but hoping not!

Has anyone thought about getting a swine flu vaccine, just as a precaution for the cruise? I have an appt to talk to the Dr. about it. I am hoping he will give it to me, even though I am not in the typical catagory of folks that they are recommending get one. I think I should get one, since my immune system is compromised from having had cancer within the past 5 years and the havoc treatments made to my system. I also suffer from fibromyalgia, which also compromises the immune system. I just want to be pro active in doing what I can to protect myself.

How about shore excursions????? Does anyone have anything planned? We're pretty sure we know what we're doing at each port...hoping to finalize everything this weekend. Grand Cayman, dolphin royal swim and then the turtle farm next to dolphin discovery. (we get free tickets to turtle farm for doing the swim) then back to Georgetown to shop. Cozumel most definently going to Nachi Cocum Beach Club, my favorite beach of this itinerary. Belize going to Caulker Caye and Victor Bodden Beach shuttle and Island tour.

First and foremost- congrats on having battled cancer!!!  It's so great to hear when someone has.  Once again- looking at the countdown and just can't wait.  We're pretty sure of what we're doing, we are perhaps going to take the Atlantis Sub ride in the Caymans- I haven't seen it on Carnival's webpage, but this is one of the few excursion that surprisingly aren't cheaper if booked through the operator directly, so I was just going to go through Carnival.  That's only a little over and hour so after that we're going to hit some snorkeling spots along the coast (Eden Rock, Wreck of the Cali, Burger Reef, ect).  Cozumel we plant to just hit a beach club for the day.  Belize we are doing the Altun Ha Ruins and River Wallace- I've just heard great things about this place over and over and also saw you gave it a good review on another thread line.  In Roatan we've booked with Jolly Roger for some more snorkeling and a tour through the nature park.  T-Minus 90 days until sail away!!

You will love the river Wallace and Altun Ha...Great tour, one of our favorites ever taken with Carnival!! You will love the wildlife!! Where you get off the river, there is a little makeshift (unless they have modernized since we were there 4 years ago)restaurant and they will offer the sale of lunch...make sure you get the roasted chicken red beans and rice. It is so yummy, cooked in Coconut milk and it is really good! At this spot is where I also bought a bottle of cashew wine, which is on my list to look for in Belize this trip. What an awesome wine, many different flavors, but all made from cashews. After lunch break, you will load a bus and go to the myan site of Altun Ha. Lots of sightseeing from the bus. Altun Ha is an easy site to walk, very even ground, and a smaller site, but very nice!  It was a toss up for us...we almost wanted to do this tour again, but have decided to snorkel shark alley reef and caulker caye.

Re: ROLL CALL: JAN 10, 2010

Quick quesiton:  has anyone crusied this time of year?  That is mid-January.  I was wondering what to expect as far as the make up of guests- specifically the head count of kids.  First off I know Carnival is the family friendly line and you should always expect kids no matter what time of year it is- and we're okay with that, if we weren't we'd go with princess or something, nonetheless, since this cruise is leaving after schools/college's christmas breaks have ended and is well before spring breaks- do you think there will be fewer kids?  Example, our last cruise we took was in the month of March (March-April spring breaks) so about 500 of the 2200 guests were kids.  We're parents of 3 of our own, so we love kids, but it felt like the ship was ran over with them, the adults only pool and hot tub had kids in it 24/7, people even brought them to the midnight comedy shows!!  I know I can't believe anyone would want their kids to see that!!  There were kids running around the dining room, even on formal night.  So does anyone think there might be a slight chance of fewer kids with the time of year we're going?  I've been told pretty much to go mid Jan-mid Feb or Sept-Nov to avoid the large numbers of kids.  Any thoughts

I would think that there would be less kids as most schools start the 2nd week of Jan or before... that was our thinking.  Jan 10th won't get you away from college age people though, winter break tends to last till end of Jan/early Feb.

bklsmom:  we're rather excited for the altun ha and river wallace trip- a few quick questions for you: how is the boat ride; fast/slow rough at all?  i ask because we just bought a new camera and i'd love to bring it with us to shoot some pictures of the wildlife and the river but if it's like a speed boat ride i'd probably not take it as i don't want to lose it to the river :)

also- when you get to the ruins, and assuming it hasn't recently rained, do you have ample time to climb up to the top of one?  i came across a review of this trip, on a completely different site- i think it was travel advisor, and someone said they were given only 5 minutes to do this so they didn't have time??  i question the facts on that one but wasn't sure.  if weather permits we'd love to go to the top of one just to say we've done it if anything. looking at the fact this 5 1/2 hr excursion has 2 1/2 hrs set aside for transportation, i can't see how they'd only allot you 5 minutes to climb out of a couple hours.

and finally- at the mid point stop- we're you can grab some lunch and stuff- what methods of payment do they accept?  cash? is it US Dollars? i just don't want to get my wife out in the middle of the jungle and see her go all day without eating- she might throw me to the crocodiles!! LOL.  also is there anyone who sells some local crafts/small souvinears and if so form of payment?

thanks for any help you may offer!!!!   can't wait!!!!!

Re: ROLL CALL: JAN 10, 2010

Yes, we have cruised in beginning/mid January before, and there is significantly less kids. I've never seen any large amount of college kids either. I know my girls usually have to be back at shcool around the 10th - 15th, so not a problem. Should be a great cruise, and wonderful weather...hoping the cold fronts stay away from the Caribbean that week! That is usually the only down side to cruising this time of year, sometimes the surf is up, and we've missed ports stops in GC 2X's, due to not being able to tender safetly. Even though it doesn't drop the temp, it does produce some really rough sailing at times. Getting closer...YAY!!
