Is my bf going to look out of place with dress pants, shirt and tie. There is no way he will wear a jacket and it would be useless to buy one for a one night event. For myself I did get something that will suit the night, my Dad's birthday, the office xmas party... and whatever party I throw for myself so I can wear it again.. lol

That is exactly what my kid and I wore to Formal Night.  I felt out of place for being over dressed.  A lot of other guys sitting around the same area I sat, were in jeans and shorts.

Yea, there were other areas in the dining room where guys (and gals) were quite formally dressed, and looked great, but that wasn't true were I sat.

In reading through this forum, I figured out what would be underdressed. What would be overdressing?? My first cruise is in March and I love to get dolled up! If I brought a floor length gown and brought my hubby a tux, would we feel outta place??  I know that other people's opinion shouldn't matter, but I hate the feeling that I'm being stared at or judged because I'm out of place.

When a guy wears dress pants and a tie, and looks around and sees the other guys wearing shorts and a pull-over shirt, he feels overdressed.  Guys like uniformity, and if every guy was wearing the exact same outfit, they would be content.  Whereas, a gal would freak if she walked into a room and saw other women wearing the exact same outfit.

However, if you two dressed up, I don't think the crowd would have negative thoughts about you.  Like I mentioned in other thread here, there was a woman on my last cruise who was dressed "jaw dropping" gorgeous.  Yea, I stared for a few moments, but not because I was thinking she was out-of-place (just breath-taking-ly unique).

If you are lucky that everyone else at your table dressed up too, I think it would be a wonderful time.

If you like to get dressed, do it,  I also like to get dressed and have never felt out of place.  I have found that when you cruise during the school year and on 7 day or longer cruises people do seem to dress up more.   I havent seen many men wearing a tux recently but  there will be a few that still do.

mom and i dressed up! she wore a floor length dress that she had worn for my wedding, and i had a very sparkly cocktail dress. were we overdressed? heck, no! i did see a few who were underdressed though! :D we saw quite a few wedding-y dresses, many MANY suits, a couple of tuxes.

i say, wear the heck out of the gown and tux! how often do you get to REALLY dress up? this is a great excuse! and make sure to get pictures! the photo i have of mom and i together all dressy like this is one of my faves....

Carnival no longer calls it formal night, it is cruise elegant night.  You will see everything at that dinner.  My dh mentioned after our last cruise, he didn't see any tuxes and we were on a seven day cruise.  I have never worn a formal but I do wear dress pants or carwash pants and glitzy tops.  You will see almost everything, wear what makes you feel good and don't worry about other people.  If you like formals, by all means, wear one.  Since we retired, we don't have many occasions to dress so I enjoy it.

Re: Formal Night should be Formal?

we've experienced sitting with a couple wearing jeans and tshirts too at the same time i wore a jacket and tie and my wife wore a formal evening gown- and guess what- we had a blast!  we strolled through the ship and felt like royalty. we were stopped twice on the way to dinner for a photo op- and it turned out so great we bought one. we also found those not dressed up seemed to be more sticking out than those who did.  we never have opportunities to dress up and have a nice dinner, for us it's typically taking the kids out for pizza if we do go out. so dressing up was a treat.  there were a lot of people wearing suits and gowns, a few with tuxes, some wearing casual- that is polos and slacks, and yes you will always have a couple people wear something that would only be acceptable at the buffet, but as long as carnival tolerates it, it will keep going on (some lines such as princess and royal carribean enforce their codes but you get what you pay for and their double the price). regardless dress up and live like a king for a night- we sure will on our next cruise in january!!

Go for it if you like! However, I prefer a dark suit to a tux. I always wear a black suit and shirt and tie on a 7-nighter. For a shorter cruise, I opt for a sport coat, dockers, and a shirt & tie. We dress like we would for Sunday Morning Church for Formal Night. Diane did dress a little fancier in June on the Pride, as we were celebrating her 50th Birthday with our kids and grandkids. You'll want to get some nice Formal Photos to cherish for a lifetime! We felt neither overdressed, nor underdressed in these two photos. Have a great cruise!

We love you Kalyn Padget and Rosie Unsworth (our lovely adopted daughters), Amy Barton, Melanie Therrien, TJ, and Rick! The Fun Crew puts the fun in Carnival Cruising! Thank you Butch for being a fantastic CD!

I've only been off the Holiday for a short time, and I'm already having fits of melancholy. I guess unless we can cruise every two months, I'll probably never be satisfied again.

Our 7 YO and 6 YO grandsons decided that they would prefer a Thanksgiving Cruise to Key West and Cozumel on the Destiny to Thanksgiving in Orlando/Kissimmee this November. We must be teaching them well. Thanks for an excuse for my booking another cruise, guys!

Re: Formal Night should be Formal?

I have to begin by saying that it's okay to wear whatever you are comfortable with as long as it is within the guidelines given by the cruiseline. I find it rude to disrespect the staff on the ship by not doing so.

With that being said, I bought a tux for my husband about 2 years ago and I wear long evening dresses, because we truly enjoy the experience. We have 5 kids and a grand-daughter, so when we are on a cruise we take advantage of the atmosphere and reunite as a couple. Not everyone enjoys dressing up, but if you do...go for it. I'd much rather be over-dressed than under-dressed.

I think the dark suits with dress shirts and ties look fine, but I never did like tuxes. Get as dressed-up ad you like. BTW, we were trying hard not to laugh in this pic, and the ladies were behind the photographer trying to get us to laugh!

We like dressing up as we don't have a lot of reason to at home. I purchased a tux to wear on cruises as we are fortunate to be able to take several a year. I know the shorter the cruise the less folks dress up, however I enjoy going out with my bride dressed up.

A tux is cool for an adult I guess. My grandsons are lucky to get a year out of a suit before they outgrow them, and we guys always dress alike for Formal Nights, so we opt for the dark suits. I guess it's a lot like booking only balconies and cruising less, or going with a oceanview and cruising more often with the money you save. It's all personal preference I suppose.

    CruisinPenguin:

I would like to know how others feel about this.  I can't stand those two nights getting all dressed up only to have someone refuse to dress right and ruining atmosphere in the room when it's suppose to be suit and tie only.  You have a choice, don't dress up, then go somewhere else and eat.  Some of us actually look forward to those two nights just to get all dolled up.  Like I said, I was just hoping to get other peoples opinions of this.

Some people think it is all about them and they can do whatever they please regardless of the dress code.  It is a shame that those of us that want to dress up have no place to go without running into the others but they have multiple places to dine wearing whatever they wish.

That being said remember we all have opinions just like we have noses and do not have to and probably never will agree on this issue.

Regardless of what folks do, she who must be obeyed like me to dress properly so I do if for no other reason then respect for her.

A bit late to this discussion but cannot stay silent.  Some people think it is all about them and can do whatever they please, sure.  And some people think it is all about them and get upset at what everyone else around them does.  Worry about yourself.  You'll find your evening will be much more enjoyable if you concentrate on your own evening instead of worry about why Jane and John Doe at the next table aren't wearing what yheou think they should be.

DH and I dress nice for elegant night, although I'm not willing to spend $200 on something I'll only wear once.  I can assure you we are not the people you're looking upon with distaste, however.  On the other hand, we don't join you in looking around the room for people who aren't dressed as well or better than we are.  We do admire those who are dressed nicely.  We don't think twice about the attire of those who aren't.  (Okay, I might notice if someone attempted to wear a swimsuit, but I don't think I've ever seen that.)
