    grider2006, you will be fine!

If anyone is looking for glitzy, you can pick up things at eBay for around $20 (for a new $200 dress).  I bought a really nice tux for my husband for $150 at jcpenney.com including all accessories (shoes, shirt, cumberbund, cuff links, etc.) for our Celebrity cruise next spring.

    grider2006:

i am wearing a nice dress and my husband is wearing a pair of black dress pants with a button up dress shirt. they told us that was acceptable that you didn't have to wear a suit and tie. somepeople don't have the money for that.

thanks for everyone's suggestions. I myself also LOVE getting to dress up. I hardly go anywhere but an occasional wedding where you get the opportunity to. I will suggest that he wear a button up shirt over it or ever a jacket over it. I don't want to be embarrassed and him miss a nice dinner like you said

Well I am a newbie when come to Cruising, earlier this year we did our first 5 nights cruise right after a week of Disney before heading home just to relax a little bit.  We have 2 formal nights and we skipped both nights.  While we do enjoy the dinning experiences, packing extra pair of shoes, suites and ties and the time and effort of getting ready for dinner was simply too much work, I think it is inappropriate if you wear sandal, short, bikini and/or t-shirt to dinner, but an all out tux and dresses is also too much for a vacation.  When we finally meet our table mates for the fist time at the third nights dinner they told us that what we were wearing that night is more formal than some guesses at formal night, because of what they said we are looking forward to do all 7 nights dinner in the dinning rooms (in 3 weeks time), but after reading some of the pro-formal night dinner comments, I think we going to skip those night.  I prefer to be comfortable when on vacation.

packing all of it is definitely a downfall. especially with the 2 suitcase limit and the airlines 50 lb. limit

Re: Formal Night should be Formal?

Carnival doesn't actually call them "Formal" nights - they call them "Cruise Elegant" nights.  Their definition of cruise elegant (from the FAQ's) is:

Cruise Elegant Dining Dress Code:  Gentlemen - Dress slacks, dress shirts. We also suggest a sport coat. If you wish to wear suits and ties or tuxedos, by all means we invite you to do so.  Ladies - Cocktail dresses, pantsuits, elegant skirts and blouses; if you‘d like to show off your evening gowns, that's great too!

Personally I don't have a "formal" (read that cocktail, evening, prom, "new years eve") type dress and don't intend to buy one or two to wear on a cruise.  I'd rather book an excursion with that money.  So instead I wear a dressy black skirt with a dressy top and some fancy shoes.  This fits right in with Carnival's policy for "Cruise Elegant" night dress code.

I'm sorry if that offends anyone...but my intention is to look nice without adding to my closet something that I might wear once or twice.   Should I show up to Cruise Elegant night in shorts or capris and cotton top?  No.  But I don't feel that I have to look like I'm heading off to prom either.

    Lizz,

You guys look great.  As you know I too like the Hawaiian shirt look.  My boys are both over 6'.  One is 6'5" and the other is 6'3"  It is actually less expensive to clothe them then feed them.

Actually packing is not a problem.  He can wear a jacket on the plane and then you are just packing a shirt and pants for the day just like you have to do anyway.

Thanks Larry and that is pretty funny re: cheaper to clothe them... Bill too has a huge appetite!  Big Smile

On Cruise Elegant night we have dressed both way.  Formal most times but sometimes my husband will just wear a pair of dress slacks with a button down shirt and I will wear dress slacks with a nice top.  Don't avoid the dining room just because you don't want to dress formal.  Just go and enjoy!

That is your choice and not a problem

While we do enjoy the dinning experiences, packing extra pair of shoes, suites and ties and the time and effort of getting ready for dinner was simply too much work,

Again your choice and not a big deal.

I think it is inappropriate if you wear sandal, short, bikini and/or t-shirt to dinner, but an all out tux and dresses is also too much for a vacation.

    I agree with your opinion.

Why let other people's opinion dictate what you will do and not do?  We all have them just like noses so go and enjoy the main dining room every night.

I prefer to be comfortable when on vacation.

Most of us do and some find dressing up to be comfortable.

I agree with the Penguin on this.  You do have a choice of dressing up and going into the main dining room or remaining casual and enjoying similar food buffet style.  I plan to wear my tux and get seated with the grown ups....lol

This is how I feel about it too.

Although I have my first Carnival cruise coming up, on HAL very few violate the code.  HAL used to have Formal, Semi-formal and casual and in none of those were jeans allowed.  They have relaxed their casual to include jeans, dropped semi-formal and still have formal.  I don't know abouut CCL, but on HAL if you show up not following the code, you will be seated but you will really look so out of place compared to the other passengers. For me personally, I have suit I bought just for cruising and I guess my funeral because I enver wear it at home,,,ever.

I will admit though by reading the cruise lines advise on the CCL website, I may not wear the tie part, just the coat.  I do get overheated cramming 5000 calories in my piehole at dinner !
