I would like to know how others feel about this.  I can't stand those two nights getting all dressed up only to have someone refuse to dress right and ruining atmosphere in the room when it's suppose to be suit and tie only.  You have a choice, don't dress up, then go somewhere else and eat.  Some of us actually look forward to those two nights just to get all dolled up.  Like I said, I was just hoping to get other peoples opinions of this.

Some people think it is all about them and they can do whatever they please regardless of the dress code.  It is a shame that those of us that want to dress up have no place to go without running into the others but they have multiple places to dine wearing whatever they wish.

That being said remember we all have opinions just like we have noses and do not have to and probably never will agree on this issue.

Regardless of what folks do, she who must be obeyed like me to dress properly so I do if for no other reason then respect for her.

Well, I think Bill looks better in his nice Hawaiian shirt than some of the jokers I have seen crammed into their high school prom suits.   Like I said before, glad we always have a table for two as to not offend someone else while eating... and we are not eating on the Lido Deck.   He wears slacks, I wear a nice, conservative, no girlfriends hanging out type of dress...   to each their own.   It's not like we are slumming.

    Irishlizz,

I agree about Hawaiian shirts.  I wear them almost every night EXCEPT elegant night not to please others but to please she who most be obeyed as that is what she prefers me to wear.  I learned a long time ago that when mama is happy everybody is happy.

Amen Larry! Diane and I go so far as to wear matching Hawaiian shirts and my Dockers must match her Capris in color on Cruise Casual Nights so I avoid being chastised. Our tablemates on the Imagination in March commented several times on how cute we looked dressed to match each other. That keeps Mama happy!

By the way, we have taken your advice on debarkation morning to heart. A nice, leisurely sitdown breakfast in the dining room passes the time until VIP Self-Assist Debarkation very well. We were only in the lounge with the other Concierge Club Cruisers for 10-15 minutes after breakfast before debarking. Thanks for your great advice!

    Smitty

We love you Kalyn Padget and Rosie Unsworth (our lovely adopted daughters), Amy Barton, Melanie Therrien, TJ, and Rick! The Fun Crew puts the fun in Carnival Cruising! Thank you Butch for being a fantastic CD!

I've only been off the Holiday for a short time, and I'm already having fits of melancholy. I guess unless we can cruise every two months, I'll probably never be satisfied again.

Our 7 YO and 6 YO grandsons decided that they would prefer a Thanksgiving Cruise to Key West and Cozumel on the Destiny to Thanksgiving in Orlando/Kissimmee this November. We must be teaching them well. Thanks for an excuse for my booking another cruise, guys!

    Smitty,

We do not use self assist VIP or Regular.  I do not like dragging all our stuff off the ship.  We like to stay on board as long as possible.  By the time we get off there is no lines and our luggage is easy to spot as there are not too many bags left to pick up.

    Larry,

I was referring to the nice sitdown breakfast in the dining room. It makes your last morning seem more special, as opposed to breakfast on the Lido Deck and sitting around waiting to debark.

Somehow we've drifted from Formal Night to casual breakfast.  I do not like rushing to do anything.  I had a secretary who is a Conch (born in Key West); they are known for live and let live and not worrying about tomorrow.  She once told me I made a Conch look tense. On debarkation I will have a nice breakfast and allow to everyone else to climb over each other like crabs to be tied for first place off the ship. I can exit with a sated appetite and drive home.

I didn't do proms either. Thought they were a waste of money. Dh has a closet of hawaiian shirts as do I. I wish I could duplicate the ones I bought 10 years ago.

Off track for a minute: so if you leave your luggage outside your door you can leave when you want? but if you take your luggage with you, off the ship first?

Back to the original question: Yes.  It contributes to the mystique of cruising. It shows respect to the captain and staff.  We can pretend to be part of the class our parents and grandparents dreamed of.  If you don't think cruising, as compared to driving to your vacation destination, isn't a bit above the reach of the average person you are deluding yourself. It's an opportunity for this Mick to say "Yes, I can belong here too!" Then I go back to the Lido and order a bucket of Bud. It's a quick fantasy. Isn't that the name of a ship?  Live the fantasy on formal night and be glad it's not the Titanic (BTW - built by the Irish). We were still in a mood.

Amen Ana and cruisingpenguin! I sometimes wear my suede sport coat with slacks and a tie on Formal Nights for shorter cruises. I usually feel like I'm a tad under-dressed when I do so. If we're planning on buying photos, I always go with a nice suit. Especially if our three boys are with us.

By the way, thanks to those who gave me info on where to find burgundy dress shirts in boys' sizes for our Thanksgiviing Cruise on the Destiny. Burgundy shirts, burgundy ties, and black suits! It's going to make for an awesome photo!
