    Cozumel Excursions w/ wheelchair

I am cruising with my Granny who can walk very little on her own and will have to use a scooter for most of our cruise.  Are there any excursions that she can do in Cozumel?  She really wants to see the ruins but we are not sure if that is handicap accessible.  Any help would be appreciated.

My best advice would be to go to Carnival.com and search for the excursions with the wheelchair, motor coach or single walking figure symbol.  Read the description and you will have the best idea what is appropriate for your grandmother. You know her limitations and capabilities.

    Re: Cozumel Excursions w/ wheelchair

Carnival just does not have a lot of excursions suitable for handicapped cruisers yet. Are any of your ports tendered? If so, you must take a portable wheelchair with you. The scooter will not be allowed on any tender or bus and you can rent portables from a local medical supply store for about 40 a month, maybe less for 2 weeks. I find that if we take both a portable and electric wheelchair, it's a pretty good combo that will allow DH to enjoy most of the "one-walking person" tagged excursions but we usually do not go with the Carnival group because he can't climb the big steps onto the bus and they have no place for the chair. Do some Internet research. Put in the port and "handicapped" and only correspond with tours that have a decent website for your own protection. Do not rely on getting off the ship and bargaining with a taxi driver - make your arrangements in advance to ensure your safety and a set price. However, you'll be quite safe in Key West, Nassau, and Freeport. I have not been to Cozumel but I would be careful there.

    Good luck!

    Suzie

I don't know what Carnival specifically offers, but you can go to Chankanaab park by taxi (ask for a wheelchair accessible taxi at the taxi stand when you get off the ship and when you get to the park, they have complimentary sand wheelchairs so Granny can enjoy the beach. My understanding is that the none of the ruins are handicap friendly.
