is a taxi to a beach a good idea?

I read a lot af bad reviews about Freeport. We (me, my husband and 2 year old daughter) sailing on Carnival Pride July 3 and we will have a stop there.  Now I am thinking what will be our best plan for that day. Do you think taking a taxi to a local beach will be a good idea? What beach to go? (preferably no waves), How much will be a taxi?

    Thanks

Freeport is fine,so whatever you read, forget about it.Some people will find fault with anything.Cab rides are very inexpensive. They are BIG passenger vans that wait til their van is full with people that are going to the same or close by destinations.

i didn't see any regular taxis on freeport just the vans.  and they wait until they are full before leaving.  it is $5 a head if you wait for a full van.  or $27 a couple if you don't want to wait. you can arrange a time with the driver to pick you up again as well.

Go to Lucaya Beach and there will be market shopping across the street too. The beach area was very nice and relaxing! There are pools nearby as well!

I totally agree.  They were very friendly and accomodating with the time you wanted to go back.  They also helpful in letting you know when is the best time to get back.

If you don't book an excursion you will have to take a taxi to the beach as there is no beach off of the ship.  Freeport is not unsafe, it is just you are docked in an industrial area and you have to go somewhere to do something and it is not as built us as some of the other islands.  They got hit really hard a few years ago with the hurricanes and alot of places never rebuilt.

If you go to Lucaya beach you can also go to the Sheraton (I think it is the Sheraton, alot of the hotels have changed names).  I think they charge like $10 (there should be a towel hut) or so and you can have access not only to the beach but to the pool and the waterslide also...this could be a good option with your young daughter.  Unless there is a storm you won't get alot of waves there...Freeport is alot like the DR, there is a barrier reef that keep the big waves out.

Is the Sheraton the same hotel as the Our Lacaya resort? Do you just go into the lobby and ask for a day pass?  Does the hotel's beach offer any privacy/protection from the peddlars or is the beach all the same?
