Excursions or own your own in Costa Maya?

We are stopping at this port and are debating on paying for an excursion vs doing the day on our own. Any suggestions? We wanted to do a short tour of the ruins and perhaps go to the beach. We are thinking there will be vans/tourguides around that will be cheaper than booking through carnival. Maybe they could take us to the ruins and the beach. Any suggestions?

Re: Excursions or own your own in Costa Maya?

When we were in Costa Maya we booked through Island Marketing tours. They picked us up at the port and took us to a village. When we first were arriving at the hotel, very small but cute, I thought, "oh no, what did we get ourselves into". We were the only ones there, and I wasn't sure we made a wise choice. Pretty soon people from the ship started rolling in. I think the cost was $30 adults and $20 per child. This beach was voted favorite by many different groups. As I looked around I ran into our waiter, his girlfriend that also worked on CCL and he informed me that this is the beach of choice for alot of the crew. The price included all you could drink. The kids sampled every virgin daq. they had. It's a cute beach bar, and instead of bar stools around it there were swings on all 4 sides. Really neat. After that we took a taxi and did some shopping. We did go through  a poverished neighborhood before arriving.
