We are going in Feb....what did you end up doing? We heard we can do the Rum Factory on our own much cheaper than the excursion....any suggestions?

The Rum Factory is several miles from the port. You will have to take a taxi or take a tour that includes transportation. The old colonial forts and shopping are within walking distance.

    Zingy:

Only one very important thing to remember.  Should you run late (go beyond the passenger return time/ship departure time) the ship will ONLY wait for you if you are part of a Carnival contracted excursion.  Carnival has no obligation to wait around for stragglers who go off on their own, or who take 3rd party tours.

While that is a perfectly valid caution, don't let it get one paranoid either.  Carnival adds quite a premium to their re-selling of excursions just for that perceived "comfort".

Just make reasonable choices, and have a good time.

For example, if the ship will only be in port for, say, 8 hours, don't snag yourself a 9 hour tour.  Or a 7 hour tour either.  However, a 2 hour tour that starts early in the day, should be fine.

The ports I will be visiting in February (Dream) are Cozumel, Isla Roatan, Belize and Costa Mayo - I know we are doing a tour of ruins on one of these stops (5 hours) but does anyone have any suggestions for these ports?  I hope not to do too much shopping but more taking in the sun and sights.......thanks for any input

Sara, that is a great itineray.  You will really enjoy it.  We are on the Dream 2 times this month and really looking forward to sailing her.

Having been to a few of these places in Cozumel I would do the Isla Pasion Twister excursion.  They take you to this beautiful island with a great beach and lounge chairs and hammocks and it has a good buffet and a limited open bar...it was a great, relaxing day when we went.

In Belize we did the Barrier Reef snorkeling and it was really nice.  The water there is gorgeous.  Other than that I would do the cave tubing but that is something you have to book on your own but TONS of fun.

Costa Maya the Dune Buggies are fun, we try to do these any chance we get.

Never been to Roatan so can't help you there.  Have a wonderful time

In Cozumel, my DH and I took a dune buggy tour of the island.  It included snorkeling. mexican lunch on the beach, butterfly garden and all the beer you wanted.  We had a blast!!  Here's the link http://www.cozumeldunebuggytours.com/  Both times we went to Belize, we went cavetubing with Major Tom and Tom, Jr.  Very informative family and they give you an history talk as they are driving you to the river.  Here's their link www.cave-tubing.net

Thank you for your input, i will look into all your suggestions. The one excursion that is being booked is in Belize, the Alton Ha Mayan ruins, something my mom wants to see.  I'm thinking about seeing if I can rent a bike and do my own tour, I do that every time I go to Key West, I feel like I (should) live there by now!
