    Dzibilchaltun Ruins

We are going to go to the Dzibichaltun ruins in progress through autoprogresso and was wondering if anyone had done this before and how well they liked it?

I am also interested in the Dzibilchaltun Ruins (& the Mexican Buffet/Horse Show). I'm thinking about these ruins instead of the one that takes seven hours.

Excelent excursion, close to Progreso. Our guide was Mayan and very informative. Don't know if they still let you climb on the ruins but when we went it was still allowed. The best part is that they are only 30 minutes from Progreso, so there is still time to do some shoping before reboarding the ship.

Does AutoProgresso have a website to book the excursion or do you sign up when you get off the ship?  I am interested in more information on this excursion.

We just returned 1/10 from Progreso/Cozumel.  We visited Dzibilchaltun, used AutoProgreso.  Our driver was Jose, and a GREAT guy.  He didn't speak a lot of English, but he was well known by apparently everyone on the Peninsula, lol.  He hooked us up with a great older Mayan guide at Dzibil, took us to a great cantina in Merida, and then dropped us right back at the pier at the end of the day.  Yes, you can still climb the step pyramids, and swim in the Xlacah cenote.  My son said the water was great.  At Dzibil, you can get the 'short' tour, about 30 minutes, and then wander yourself, or the 'long' tour, an hour, and wander about after, depending on how much time you have.  I wish we'd opted for the long tour...it was THAT good.  Next January, when we return, we will cut out the Merida shopping, and plan to spend the whole day at Dzibilchaltun.

You can book at at the pier when you get off the ship or you can book ahead of time through their website.  www.autoprogreso.com  It is $29 pp so a fair price.  You can also swin in the cenote after your tour so bring suit and towel!

The ruins are only about 30 minutes from the pier in Progreso. You'll have plenty of time to see the ruins, visit Merida for a beer and stop at the market in Progreso befor returning to the ship.

    Re: Dzibilchaltun Ruins

We just got back and purchased the Dzibilchaltun and Merida combo tour from Autoprogresso.  First of all, this is a MUCH better deal than buying one thru Carnival.  It was half the price.  When you get off the ship, they will be in the market where the buses take you to town.  They are very helpful, nice, and will answer all your questions.  Dzibilchaltun is about 20 - 30 mins away.  The ruins are amazing, and the cenote is a nice, refreshing treat at the end of the tour!  Definitely take your swim suit and enjoy this!  The weather is really HOT and dry, so also take a large bottle of water and wear a hat.  We were warned on the boat not to drink the water or eat any food while at port in Progresso.  After we left the ruins, we went to the town center in Merida.  This is an amazing city.  Saw beautiful buildings and toured the Governor's building and the Mayor's.  Our tour guide was very knowledgeable of Mayan history, and was a very good storyteller!  We did not have any time at the end to do any shopping or beach.  When we got back on the boat, several people were saying the public beach was good but they were approached about every 5 minutes by locals selling things.

I was sad that we missed the beach, but Merida is a fascinating place, so I am really glad we got to see it too!

Also, they still let you climb on the ruins.

Not as big as some of the others but still plenty high enough that it's fun to climb. There are other ruins there besides the pyamids. Here's a link to view some of the ruins. It really doesn't show all of the pyramid. http://www.delange.org/Dzibilchaltun/Dzibilchaltun.htm

We loved the Dzibilchaltun Ruins, really nice and not too far away from port!

Those ruins were a real highlight of our cruise to Progresso...there was not really much else to do and see near the port but the Mayan culture was impressive
