    St Thomas on a Sunday

Criused on the Miracle out of NYC on 6/18/08. We arrived in St Thomas on Sunday, 6/22/08 approximately 7:00AM and were able to get off the ship prior to 9:00AM. After doing some sightseeing and shopping near the pier area, we took an open air taxi to the main shopping area. The taxi driver told us that the shops close early, some as early as 1:00PM but most by 2:00PM. Only the open air/freestanding markets and shops near the pier stay open after that. Also most of the restaurants downtown also close early, except for the ones located in the upscale hotels and resorts. I would suggest you get to the downtown shopping areas  first after getting off the ship. Save the open air markets and the shops near the pier for after 2:00PM. Don't be afraid to explore the back alleys and and travel a bit off the beaten path, away from some of the more heavily travelled tourist areas. There are some real "hidden gems" to be found there and some of the best local cuisine that is inexpensive and tasty is there if you care to look for it. Just ask any of the shopkeepers for their recommendations of where they would eat. You won't be disappointed. Hint: Ask for Gladys's Cafe in the Royal Dane Mall, Charlotte Amalie. The food is local, down home and the staff is friendly, laid back and makes you feel like part of their family. ENJOY!

Re: St Thomas on a Sunday

    HI Dann,

I am a resident of St.Thomas, USVI and I too would like to confirm the hours for Downtown Charlotte Amalie and Havensight Shopping Mall. The hours are Monday thru Saturday 9AM-5PM and on Sundays 9AM-1PM.  On Sundays, you should visit these areas first then have lunch or a swim.  The island is usually a ghost town on Sundays.  Sorry!

Sundays are probably best for the beach or a land and/or sea excursion.
