Transportation to Port of Civitavecchia (Rome, Italy)

For people penny pinching, does anyone have ideas, or have gone thru transfers either from airport or hotels to the port in Italy.  Has anyone used train service, and is that close to the port.. I would just like to know alternatives.. so that my finely priced cruise doesn't end up breaking the bank here!  Thanx for anyones suggestion out there!  I soo appreciate it, and would love some suggestions...  Would like to stay a couple days in Rome before the cruise...

Thanx to anyone out there who can help that has been successful in making their euro's last!  8^)

I am doing the cruise from Rome also,we booked 2 nights pre-cruise at a hotel that carnival booked for us which included transfers from the airport to the hotel and transfers from the hotel to the port,if you try to do it on your own, remember the dollar is not worth very much and you will probably end up spending more unless you can share a ride with another couple.I thought the price I received from Carnival was not that bad considering it included all transfers.I don't know about the trains but you will have all the luggage with you and I would think it would be a pain lugging it around. As far as breaking the bank,I know the feeling,Cruise plus airfare plus excursions plus hotels =$$$$$$$$  I did book quite a while ago and I'm sure with the dollar continuing to fall the prices have changed.

    $$$$$$$$ sounds  scarey!!!

Curious about the prices Carnival charges for the hotel rooms available.... so that you do by calling, that isn't done online....?

    Thanx again..

I did call my Carnival agent and she told me what hotels were available and how much,I'm staying at the Visconti Palace hotel which is real close to all the major sites and the Vatican,I think the furthest thing was the Coliseum, not even 2 mile away and the Vatican was only 15 minutes walking. The hotel with transfers and bellboy tips was  ,are you ready, $400 a night I checked the price of the hotel online and was around $350 a night without the transfers so they are not way off.The hotel also had a free breakfast included in the price, which helps.I have been planning this trip for 10 months and have done lots of research so don't be afraid to ask.

When are you going?  I am going on the June 27th sailing with my sister and son.  We are trying to figure out the cheapest way to get to Civitaveccia also.  And at the port in Livorno, it would be great to team up with another couple or something to help split the cost of a private car with driver to get to Florence.  I heard that is much better than taking the bus.

I'm taking a cruise on 5/22 that leaves from Rome. From what I've researched there is a train that  goes to Civitavecchia from the main station in Rome. The station is called the Termini I believe. It costs about 10-15 euros and is about an hour long. So far it seems like thats the most common way and the cheapest.

If you go to trip advisor or the roll call on Cruisecritic.com there are extensive comments on taking the train, cost, schedule, etc.  It seems to be a much less exoensive way to go, especially if you are young and not dragging too much baggage. Just be wary of your luggage.  Do not leave it out of your sight for a second!  Good luck.

Re: Transportation to Port of Civitavecchia (Rome, Italy)

    Hello Pat.

I also checked on transportation from Rome to Civitavecchia and taking in consideration the cost, so far the best way is the train from the Termini. It is my understanding that it cost 11.00 Euros per person through the "italiarail.com" website. You must book it within 60 days of departure. From the Civitavecchia's station, there is a 5 minutes walk to the Carnival shuttle that will take you to the ship. I have not done or confirmed all of this yet, since my cruise is not until Aug 26, 08. If I find anything else, I will keep you posted. Take care and have a great trip.

    Daniel.
