Need info on hotels in Rome

My wife and I went on the 26 Aug med cruise and what a great time. We are going back again next year and want to spend a couple days pre-cruise. Are we better off booking the motel thru carnival or finding one ourself. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A friend and I are going on the Freedom in Sept.  I booked us in at the Visconti Palace Hotel for our first 2 pre-cruise nights.  It is with in walking distance of a lot of Rome.  Spanish steps etc and shopping areas.  Can see all of Rome from roof top terrace restaurant.  There were other cheaper places out farther but I wanted to be close to mid town.  Price thru Carnival was a bit better than booking my self.  Then we will do the Vatican tour at the end of our 12 day cruise.  The Vatican tour can be pretty long.

     Hi Kruzin,

We are staying at the Visconti Palace Hotel 2 days pre-cruise  in June,we are doing the Vatican on our 2nd day,if you are interested in purchasing tours in Rome or the Vatican I have found a Tour Company which is supposed to be very good.I hope so,I purchased the skip the line tickets for the Vatican Museums,a little pricey but those lines can be 2-3hrs long and with only a limited  amount of time in Rome I did not want to waste too much time. The website is Viator.com I also liked the location of the hotel.Good Luck

    Hell-o Alinflorida:

My wife and I are also booked on a June cruise (June 3rd) and are staying two nights in same hotel. Looked like a great location. We let Carnival do the booking so as not to run into any problems when we arrive. If you are on the same time table maybe we can meet up and tour the Vatican together. We can not wait. Celebrating our 19th wedding aniversary.

     Hi Harry,

We also let Carnival book the hotel the price including transfers I thought was not bad,and also I didn't want any surprises.I got you by a few,we are celebrating our 38th wedding anniversary.I think I told you on a different thread that we are doing the Vatican on the second day,we bought a skip the line entrance tickets to the museum, bought them from www.Viator.com, they are supposed to get us in by around 930am and then we are on our own,if you are doing the same we'll meet.I think you are also arriving early on the 1st,I'm hoping we can be at the hotel by 11am,they have a storage room for the luggage so if the room is not ready we can still be on our way pretty early. We took this hotel because of the location also,we plan on walking everywhere.I have our itinerary all mapped out, even where to eat.

Here are a few tips I have picked up,pick pockets are a major problem,be aware of your surroundings and use a money belt or neck pouch under your clothes.

Restrooms are not free, have some Euros in coins, toilet tissue is not always available so carry pocket size kleenex with you,if possible use McDonalds for your restroom stops always clean and free. There are 2 on my itinerary, one by the Pantheon and one by the Spanish steps
This is my itinerary from the Hotel,Piazza Navona,Pantheon lunch or restroom stop at McDonalds, Piazza Compidoglio,Roman Forum,Coliseum,Trevi Fountain,Spanish steps,McDonalds back to hotel.I don't think we will have time to go inside some attractions but we will see how it works out.Are you bringing your suit for formal night  now that they have relaxed the dress code?

Hi Cheryl: The Hotel is going to arrange transport to the ship. The Hotel is also going to pick us up at the airport when we fly in and take us to the hotel. If you have any other questions, please ask. Jim

Try www.booking.com.  We reserved the Muratte Loft (a mini-suite overlooking the fountain) at the Relais Fontana di Trevi, for 130EUR.  The website does a great job reviewing hotels and has good mapping capability for the various areas in Rome.

We will also be staying at the Relais Fontana di Trevi the weekend after our sept 7th cruise. I haven't heard much about the hotel. How did you find out about it?
