Hi all! I am a first time cruiser and I have been hearing mixed answers. My itinerary states we are departing at 5:30pm from San Diego. I have been told to be there by 2pm, 2:30pm, 4pm. I'm confused and DO NOT want to run into problems! PLEASE HELP!

Luggage

My wife and I fly into San Diego at 8:10 am the day of our departure. How early can you check in your luggage? Do they have a place where it can be stored? I'm trying to avoid hulling it around with us, and thinking about visiting the Maritime Museum of San Diego before boarding.

Also, has anyone visited the Museum and is this feasible to do the morning of the departure.

We will be traveling on the Spirit in January 2010. When we return how difficult is it to get a cab at the pier? We could get Carnival provided transportation but at $32 it seems to be a little costly. For the 3 of use that would be $96 for a 10 minute drive. A cab would be faster and cheaper IF we could get one. I am afraid there is going to be a mad rush for Cabs when everyone gets off the ship. Thanks for any input.

San Diego Port - Suite/VIP Check in

Has anyone actually experienced the VIP check in process at San Diego?

I am sailing in October from the San Diego Cruise Port. We have cruise transfers that will take us from the airport to the terminal. Our plane comes in at 11am; how early can you arrive at the terminal?

Upon arriving at the terminal how do I locate the VIP check in? What happens 1st; security line and then go to the VIP check in? We are doing a surprise for my dad (he does not know that he has a suite) so I want to be alert to the process in an effort to preserve the surprise of his cabin (he will simply open the door and get the surprise). Also my 19 year old son does not have a suite; can he be checked in with us? Thank you in advance for any tips! Michelle

Alternative Parking in San Diego

We've paid $15.00 a day for the convenience of parking directly across from the pier for short cruises. However, our next cruise is 8 days and the idea of paying $120.00 is not good. Has anyone used the alternative $7.00 to $8.00 a day lots in the pier area? Is it convenient? Not waiting a horribly long time for their shuttles? Safe?

I just wanted to pass on this little tid bit of info for those with Military ID's.

While in San Diego a few weeks back I was in need of batteries. We were walking back from Seaport Village on Pacific Hwy on our way to the Holiday Inn on Harbor Drive (across for the pier). When I looked over to my left and saw a NEX sign on a building at the corner of Pacific Hwy and Broadway (across from the Office Max or Office Depot - don't remember which one). We walked over and asked the guard if it was an exchange and he confirmed it was - although very small. We were allowed access with our military ID's. It is very small but had the batteries along with other travel type items and snack foods. If you are in need of some last minute items or want to pick up soda before your cruise this is a good place - no tax.

First timer looking for a store & diner

We are coming to San Diego for thanksgiving leaving on the Spirit Nov 27th. We will arrive Wednesday and are looking for a hotel close to the port, shopping (for soda and sundries) that will offer transportation to the port and from the airport. The Dana on Mission Bay seems OK from all I've read but I want to know if it is actually close to a good diner for the holiday and shoping for necessities?? Anyone familiar with the Dana and the immediate area??? I guess it is Mission Bay. Any suggestions on a great hotel for the holiday??

I just booked this cruise TODAY. I will be traveling with my husband, daughter (17) and son (18) and I have a few questions....

1. What is the drinking age aboard ship?

2. What is the cost for a beverage/soda card?

3. Do I make reservations ahead of time for the sushi restaurant? If so, how?

Any other tips or info would be gratefully appreciated. My son is a student at the Air Force Academy and is home for a short time every summer. We want a nice family vacation that will be relaxing and fun.

Just wondering, what tours the cruise ships offered and how much are they for San Diego?

I will be calling some of these park n rides to see if there is any reduction for military too.

Seafood in San Diego...

We've only been to San Diego once, but when we were there we went to a very nice seafood restaurant. It had a wonderful view of the bay. Had great seafood, wasn't too expensive, and had a rickshaw (sp) that would take customers to their vehicles. We're sailing out of San Diego on May 24th. I was hoping someone familiar with San Diego can tell me the name of this restaurant or suggest another that would be good. Thanks to anyone who can help.
