What to do in Costa Maya - not an organized tour.

We are going to Costa Maya on the Carnival Glory in March 2009. We are not that interested in the organized tours. But what else is there to do? I've looked online for ages looking for walking maps, street maps, do it yourself stuff..... No luck!!!

We just returned from a week on Glory. Our best side trip was in Costa Maya. We booked the Mayan Experience tour through Ivan at http://www.thenativechoice.com. The tour included a guided tour of the Chachoben Ruins and lunch with a Mayan family. It is perfect for all ages. Ivan grew up in the Mayan village and he knows all about the ruins and the Mayan culture. We learned how to make tortillas and then sat down to a wonderful lunch prepared by our Mayan hosts. The authentic Mexican flan was to die for!!! If you are looking for something special and unusual this is the tour for you. Ivan and David offer several other tours in Costa Maya and I am sure they are just as wonderful.

What to do in Belize?

I will be traveling on the Glory with my Mom(in a wheelchair), my husband and myself. Any input on what to do? Carnival does not offer handicapped accessible shore excursions. We will be also going to Costa Maya. I did find a private tour company for that leg of the trip who can accomodate the wheelchair and has a most intersting excursions. I still need input for the Belize part of the trip.

Drink Recipe?

We recently took the beach-boat-snorkeling excursion in Costa Maya, Mexico. They made a drink at the compound called a "Costa Maya" which was three different colors and I beleive had vodka in it.

Does anyone know what the actual recipe is for this drink? I was a little too hammered by the time we left to return to the ship, to remember to get the recipe from the bar-tender. It isn't in any bar-tender books I have researched since I returned in January. We are having a post-crusie party with three other couples we cruised with, and I would love to make them some Costa Maya's!

just received an email saying that the legend has replaced roatan as a stop by costa maya. when i go on my excursions and click on costa maya it says there are no excursions. is that right? tks!

We are stopping at this port and are debating on paying for an excursion vs doing the day on our own. Any suggestions? We wanted to do a short tour of the ruins and perhaps go to the beach. We are thinking there will be vans/tourguides around that will be cheaper than booking through carnival. Maybe they could take us to the ruins and the beach. Any suggestions?

Has any one been on the Costa Maya ATV Tour ?

We want to do this and also go on Costa Maya Exclusive Beach Break but wondering it we will get our money's worth. Our ship arrives at 8 and we are looking at a 9am tour so we will be at the beach club by lunch time and the ship doesn't leave until 5pm. The price is only $35 and includes all drinks, beach chairs and palapas but that will only give us 5 hours of drinking and relaxing....

In a way I think it will be worth it to know they will save us a chairs etc, we were there two years ago and couldn't find a chair ANYWHERE! I guess and I've read that the prices are really high for drinks in Mahahual now so I think I've just convinced myself:-)

why is carnival not going to costa maya?

We recently booked a 8d on freedom 4/11/09. In book ports were costa maya , costa rica & Pamama. Our CVP said port wasn't reopened , but i have seen wonderful pictures of rebuilt port, and Glory was their in Nov .Whats going on this is one of our favorite ports I understand there not up to full capacity but why is carnival not going to this port & when will they be going back to this beutiful port?.

Costa Maya excursions

This will be our 5th cruise with Carnival. We too are VERY disappointed that we are not going to Isla Roatan. (It was one of the reasons that we picked this cruise.) I had a long conversation with Carnival yesterday and voiced my displeasure at the change. I asked why I was not advised of the change only to find out that the travel agencies were told and it was up to the agency to advise us. AND according to Carnival this change took place back in June!! I never did get a clear answer why this was changed.

Now here is the best part (haha). I was told that I can book an excursion in Costa Maya on line up until 4 days before we leave Nov. 2nd. I told them that there were only Scuba excursions listed so far and I was not certified or interested in going scuba diving. Carnival said that they had to get in contact with the excursion venders and to get the everything set up. (Now keep in mind that this change took place back in June! We are now 17 days from departure.) What could possibly take this long to get arranged and on the website when they deal with these venders on a weekly basis? I believe that Carnival dropped the ball on this one.So Carnival then told me that once I get on board, I can visit the excursion desk to make my booking! along with everyone else on board?

I have been to Costa Maya before. There is shopping at the end of the pier. Be sure to bargain with the vendors. DO NOT pay the original price they give you. If the vender doesn't want to bargain, walk away. They will come after you if they to make the sale. Also you can bargain on the liquor.

See you all on the 2nd of November! (At the excursion desk! LOL)

Going to Costa Maya in Nov. Has anyone used island Marketing or any of the other local tour guides for the ruin excursion? We really wanted to see the ruins, though not sure which one to go to? Any info would help. Thanks

we are VERY disappointed that our stop in roatan was changed to costa maya. (we are sailing on the legend, nov. 2nd, 2008). but to make matters worse, when i go to plan activities and look at the excursions under costa maya, it says there are none! i am talking about the 'my cruise' page. the one that says: pre-cruise registration, my documents, plan activities, etc. does this mean that not only will i not get to go where i wanted to, roatan, but i also won't have any carnival excursions to choose from? this is our first cruise and i must say i'm very disappointed in carnival.

Costa Maya itineray change

Just noticed that Carnival has completely taken Costa Maya off of the itinerary for my cruise April, 5-12 onboard the Glory and given us an extra day at sea. Also, Costa Maya has been replaced by Roatan Island starting with May 2008 Glory Western Carribean sailings and Nassau has been replaced with Freeport. Just a heads up to everyone. It might be a good idea to for anyone who is cruising the region to take a peak at their itineray in their reservation section to see if there is a change listed. I guess you can't beat Mother Nature if you need a change in your schedule, huh? Oh well, still 185 days to go, so something else may change before then.

heard the docks were down for 6 to 8 months so if its your stop it will be changed they allready took the shore exurstions off so you cant book one go to cruise critics for more info

Beyond the Costa Maya Complex

I sailed to Costa Maya aboard the Carnival Valor during the May 13-20 cruise. The complex at Costa Maya was neat, but I would not have wanted to spend an entire port visit there. It was alright for shopping after returning from my shore excursion. I took the Kohunlich Mayan Ruins excursion. The ruins are near the border of Belize. I got to see more of Mexico by traveling to the border. At the entrance to the ruins there is a tree that was transplanted from one of the ruins. It was transplanted upside down and gave life to another tree. There is a live tree inside of a dead tree. At the ruins, I enjoyed the Temple of the Masks the most. The temple houses sculpted Mayan masks. I thought we were going to stop for lunch as a meal was included. The meal was a boxed lunch. Eating the boxed lunch was like eating MREs or Meals Ready to Eat. The meal consisted of packaged tuna fish, crackers, juice, and cookies. I was hoping for an authentic Mexican meal. I enjoyed the excursion.

Has anyone just hung out at the new complex? Is it very crowded? Are the food & drink prices reasonable? It sounds like a good all day hang out with the pool & entertainment. It sounds like Margarittaville at Grand Turk..Does anyone know?
