The wake up call works thus: From your cabin phone you call a number that connects you to a computer. It prompts you to enter the time in 24-hour format, 0530 for 5:30 AM and 1730 for 5:30 PM. After it misinterprets what you entered, you try again a couple of times and get it worked out. At the designated time your phone rings and you trip over the shoes you left on the cabin floor. Picking yourself up, you make your way to the phone only to stub your toe on the chair you left in the way. Cursing under your breath, you pick up the phone and listen to some computerized garbage that you can't understand in your sleep. pain, and rage-induced haze. You slam the phone down and head back towards the bed, carefully avoiding the chair and shoes, wishing you had an alarm clock with a gentle beep and a snooze button.
Or something like that.
For the most part personalized wake up calls and knock up service disappeared long ago at all but the smallest and swankiest of resorts. But at least many of them have alarm clocks with iPod docks. Bring your own speakers if you want music in your cabin other than the marginal selections on the TV.

(the wake up works SOOOO much better when the phone is actually next to the bed. But this is SOOOO much more entertaining.)

I,and my group has NEVER used a wake up call.The minute one of us wakes up,we get the others up.It is a group deal.We hit the breakfast buffet on the Lido Deck for fresh fruit,to replace the brain cells we lost the night before.,and we are ready to go.

And you seem to like to "blabble" false statements.

My portable DVD player doesn't have an alarm feature, and all one needs is just one example to prove that your "every" is unfortunately a wrong premise.

I like to point out, that a lot of what I have learned from these discussions, come from tangents like those here. I like them.

Tekel8, you can program the phone to call you or use room service as we do to deliver coffee at the time you want to get up.

Here's something you might try - plug you iPod into the TV. You can get a cable that has the mini-jack on one end, and the banana plugs on the other end of the L and R audio. Set the TV to "Line" and play your music through the TV's speakers.

We have little travel speakers that go everywhere with us. And I think they only cost about 20 bucks at Target.

@ Bug Me Not Acct Borrower:

a) Not EVERY electronic comes with an alarm as standard. My watch does not have an alarm. Nor does my mp3 player.

b) Lots of new cruisers, and OP seems to be one, ask questions which may lead to one answer, "but wait, here's something else you may not be aware of..." Something for which I was infinitely grateful on my first cruise. Digression, in this case, can be very useful.

c) I like to know what time it is when I wake up in the middle of the night. Others in the cabin would not appreciate my turning on the TV for that purpose. Thus...the travel alarm clock. Or, in my case, the cell phone. Did you know the time on many people's cell phones gets all messed up at sea? I turn off the phone function in order to keep the time straight, and then I have a straight-functioning PDA for the week. With an alarm function, thank you. AND, an internal mp3 player for which I bring some battery-powered portable speakers I found on the cheap at Best Buy (to answer the original question)

We have a small speaker (about 6 inches long) that we bring. It is battery operated so no need for a plug. Decent sound and only cost $14 at Target. We also have a charger for our i-pod that plugs into the wall. We always bring a 6 outlet power strip because of needing to charge our camera, cell phones, i-pods, and to plug our hair dryer in.

Intresting note:

I notice alot of people on this site like to digress VERY easily. The poster was just asking a question for an iPod dock/listening station. Maybe the OP wanted to listen to some Bob Marley while they passed Jamacia or something.

Instead, you guys blabble about how to wake up. That wouldn't be a case though, because every portable electronic comes standard with an alarm feature now.Clearly the OP is more concerned about charging his iPod and listening to his MP3 collection while lounging in his stateroom, than about using an alarm clock which comes standard on any cell phone, watch, even a Gameboy (the Nintendo DS/DS lite/DSi)

After talking with a Carnival Rep who told me there's a 110v outlet near the desk/vanity area, which is perfect for placing an iHome to listen to some music while I relax in my stateroom privately.

And, when in doubt, they make travel speakers just for this kind of situation that functions on batteries, usually folds to be compact, and usually comes with a travel case. But for people who are picky with sound quality, the latter speakers are usually lower quality and offer little to no bass, whileas the iHome has 2 bass speakers and a more crisp and louder sound.

Just bring an iHome. There's an elecrical outlet on the desk/vanity area, so bring your iHome, and listen to some of your music in your stateroom (maybe some MJ in honor of his passing?)
