I don't think going at both ends would be very pleasant.

With throwing up, diarrhea, and alchol added, you will most certainly dehydrate.  Stick to ginger

Laxatives help constipation -- which is one of the two possible digestive problems associated with a change in diet, which is likely to happen on a cruise ship.  The other is diarrhea.  I'd carry small amounts of remedies for each if I were you.  They're both very expensive on the ship.  But I'd only use them "as directed".

Laxatives, in my experience, cause some amount of stomach irritation -- gas, slight nausea, etc -- but your mileage may vary.  Even so, if you're prone to motion sickness I don't think it'd be wise to risk adding to it.

Walmart or any pharmacy carries the ginger capsules.  I took the ginger and Bonine the night before the cruise and then again the morning before we boarded the ship.  I never has any sea sickness at all.  And, in agreement with the other posters here, I would say "no" to the laxatives for an upset stomach.  Happy sailing!

Re: Do Laxatives ward off Sea Sickness?

I never used to take anything for seasickness and I was not seasick but after reading so much about it, on my cruise in 2008 I took ginger and bonine.  I felt lousy.  Last week I went on a cruise with nothing and felt better.  People around us were vomiting from the rough seas in the West Caribbean with Ida at our heels and I felt fine.  Also, they dispense antinausea pills for free in the medical unit.

Do Laxatives ward off Sea Sickness?

Most certainly NOT. Sea sickness gets its start in your inner ear. Over-the-counter and prescription seasickness medications are designed to desensitize the receptors in your inner ear that are responsible for detecting motion and helping maintain your balance. The various other remedies such as sea bands, herbal remedies, and so on tend to be more homepathic effect but they work for many people.

Having odd things in your stomach, such as being overly-full or spicy or greasy or rich or what-have-you food will certainly make the situation worse but is not in itself a cause. Ginger is supposed to help settle your stomach, which is treating one of the symptoms but not the cause of the sickness - but often this is enough to keep you from practicing your technicolor yawn.

Laxatives will actually make your seasickness worse and could cause you much harm. Avoid them.
