also, anyone have any insight (not star ratings) on excursions for the southern carribean islands.

We are a couple in our 40's, open to different things besides sitting on a beach.

Depends On where you are going?  The Southern Caribbean has many different ports.

We usually do not do excursions except for possible a general tour in a port we have not been to to learn about it, the people and the culture.

That is really a personal opinion and opinions are like noses, we all have one.

Some will say any expense above an inside is not worth it so they have more money to spend on other things and some will not cruise in any cabin but a suite.

We always book the best deal that we find and do like a balcony when we can.

Like mentioned by others, the selection of a room is very subjective.  However, I would offer to be a little careful selecting one of these cabins, as many times they are just under the kids Camp Carnival play area or other outside ammenity where public guests can get to.  In that case, you will sometimes have the rumble of chairs scraping across the deck or the noise of feet running, jogging or walking.

Generally this is a pretty minor annoyance though.  This is particularly true as you really don's spend that much time in your room anyway.

If it is a good deal do it.  Otherwise, just pick a room you will be happy with and enjoy your trip.

I have one booked for our Thanksgiving cruise.  The one we have booked has ceiling to floor windows which I like and has more room since it does not have the balcony. I think it has 230 sq ft vs 185.  With four people that should make a difference.  If you go to cruisedeckplans.com you can look at the deckplans and make sure you aren't directly below anything.  It also is convenient to the lido deck and has alot of elevators.  When I upgraded it was 400 more than the interior but by the time the final payment came, all the prices had dropped and it was the same as what the interior originally was.
