We like dressing up as we don't have a lot of reason to at home. I purchased a tux to wear on cruises as we are fortunate to be able to take several a year. I know the shorter the cruise the less folks dress up, however I enjoy going out with my bride dressed up.

A tux is cool for an adult I guess. My grandsons are lucky to get a year out of a suit before they outgrow them, and we guys always dress alike for Formal Nights, so we opt for the dark suits. I guess it's a lot like booking only balconies and cruising less, or going with a oceanview and cruising more often with the money you save. It's all personal preference I suppose.

Smitty, It is personal preference and I think folks trying to looking nice look fine. I do dislike folks showing up in wife beaters and jeans or shorts.

Regardless of what everyone says about this subject, there are no right or wrongs.  I dress up because She who must be obeyed likes it that way and out of respect for her I do regardless of how I feel.

I just hope you do what is right in your significant others eyes and then you will have no problem.  If your partner thinks it is alright then by all means just get in line and graze at the trough if that is what you want.

Remember it is your cruise and enjoy it any way you want and be sure to respect your significant other's desires and opinions.

I totally agree with making your significant other happy.  On the other hand she wanted to make it easier for me by suggesting I bring a sports jacket and dress pants but I took my tux to make for better pictures and I feel good wearing it.  It takes up no more space than the jacket and pants and I figure since I bought one for our wedding two years ago that it was an investment that I wanted to amortize over a couple of vacations.  There really isn't that much opportunity to wear one.

My hubby is like you except he got a "Gambler's Coat" western cut, long jacket, has the look of a tux, but with an old time western feel.  We are involved in the Houston Rodeo, so he gets to wear it on cruises & maybe once each year to an auction ( they can be very dressy).  We both like dressing up on cruises, because it is out of the norm for us. Plus we love looking at everyone in great clothes, he likes all the women in sexy dresses.

hubby just wears a dark suit, shirt and tie, I wear a long dress usually.  I enjoy dressing up, it just adds to the atmosphere and the cruise and the romance.  But, the formal night doesn't have to be quite that formal and be still quite comfortable and enjoyable, and I have to say the food is very much worth it.  Some friends of ours, he won't dress up, dockers and a shirt, but she does, and we still have a wonderful time.

Well..I like dressing up, I work in a man's jeans and tee shirt environment.  I think men look dashing in a suit and tie, a teenage boy in a suit…that is a young man raised right.  However, there are some really fun, interesting not so dressy couples whose company I would miss too. When it comes to dressing, there are diamonds in the rough and there are some just putting lipstick on a pig.

Re: Formal Night should be Formal?

I'm taking my first cruise (at age 63) on the Conquest in March, and my travel agent said that dressy pants & tops were just fine for formal night. The last time I wore a formal dress was in 1988 for a presidential inauguration party, and it doesn't fit any more :-D I don't like dresses and consequently don't have any, nor would I buy something that I'd never wear again. I love beautiful tops, though, so I don't have a problem with that. My son, who asked me to go on the cruise to share the expense of the cabin, will wear a suit and tie.

You will have such a wonderful time and get so pampered.  I saw a lot of ladies with dress slacks and dressy tops, it always varied night to night, but many optioned for slacks.  Your first cruise.. free room service.. not that your in your room much to utilize it.. the buffets are so good.. and check both sides, on one ship I was on it was very much different on each side ... the small ship I was on had very similar stuff on both sides but they may have changed that by now.. be sure and check.  Don't skip the dining room for late night dinner though.. definitely worth going instead of the buffet.  The service is excellent (Ive heard of rare exceptions.. but mine and my friends have all been beyond reproach), try the dining room at least once for breakfast.. some love it and some would much rather have the buffet.. but it is nice to try once.  All kinds of entertainment all over the ship.. just depends on what you are in the mood for.  The beds are extremely comfortable.. enough you almost want one at home.

    Have fun..
