    Hmm [^o)] Pacemaker question

I have a pacemaker and have had for many years but, the only thing I carry identifying it is the original registration card.  I never received another on.  Will I need anything else besides that as I know I can't go thru a metal detector.  We are not flying into San Diego we are driving so I am not concerned with the airport just embarking and debarking.

Any  help on this would be appreciated,  This has been something I had to get used to at a pretty young age in comparison to most that have pacemakers so it just now occurred to me I might need something else to go on board.

I can't remember if you have to walk thru a metal detector when you board or not.  I'm thinking you do.

How long 'til your cruise?  Do you have time to get a letter from your doctor stating you have a pacemaker implanted and you can't go thru the metal detector?

    Re: Pacemaker question

Our cruise is Oct 18.  I guess I will contact the pacemaker company and see what they can send me.  I don't want to take any chances and not be able to cruise once we are at the ship.

I believe there is a metal detector, but you're definitely not the first person with a pacemaker.  When you go to the airport, do you just show your card so they will hand scan you?  I'm sure security knows about the pacemaker issue and will accommodate you.  You might want to let the cruise line know ahead of time so they can make accommodations if necessary.

    Re: Pacemaker question

There is a metal detector just inside the entrance to the embarkation processing area, next to the X-ray machine for your carry on bags and prior to your getting to the check-in plaza.

Normally you are also be required to pass through a metal detector (with nearby X-ray unit) as you re-enter the ship on return from a shore excursion. You didn't indicate your destination, but if you are on the Elation to Ensenada, they also have a metal detector and X-ray machine that you normally have to pass through (and then again when you board the ship).

There are no metal detectors at the exit of the cruise.

    Re: Pacemaker question

I haven't flown since about a year before I ended up getting one.  I will contact Carnival and find our what I need to get or if what I have to show will suffice.

My dad has a pacemaker and we just cruised in February.  All you need to have is your registration card for your pacemaker.  They will wand you instead of going through the stand up metal detector.  Works the same for entering the ship when you come back from port.

I have a cardiac implanted device my travel card saids that walking threw a metal detector will set it off and a magnetic wand being waved over it will adversely effect the fucntion of the device. If you ask they will hand search you at customs and on the ship. info comes from Boston Scientific the company that makes them. also no cell phone are to be used on that side the device is on because of the battery.

    Cool [H] Re: Pacemaker question

Thanks everyone for the info.  When I ended up getting this dumb thing we had 3 kids at home and we were struggling financially so I never thought ahead to situations like cruising or flying.  With only one kid at home and better jobs now we are becoming adventurous.

I have 108 days to figure it out.  We are sailing to Mexico on the Spirit on Oct 18 from San Diego.  I had to take the cruise clock off because it malfunctioned and started changing the days much faster than they were supposed.  One of these days I will put up a new clock.

HEY! I WANT ONE OF THOSE! The clocks I get seem to count reaaaaalllllly slooooowwww until I board the ship, then they run at triple time. I'd love one that makes the pre-cruise days go much faster, so long as the cruise days run at normal or even 1/3 speed!

Tongue Tied [:S] Re: Pacemaker question

Yea, but it had me so confused.  My profile said one number of days and the clock said another.  I finally just deleted the darn thing.

    Re: Pacemaker question

I had my first pacemaker implanted at 28 and on my second. Third degree av block. I have never set off an alarm and have been through lots of them. I have also had the wand used without any problems. The newer the pacemaker is the fewer problems. If you have any other questions, my email is dermz@sbcglobal.
