@Orion: Please let us know when you get back if you stopped in Roatan and if so, if you saw any signs of unrest.

The coup was early Sunday morning; not surprising.

Okay June sailors, did you get to go to Roatan? Were there demonstrations? (the State Dept says there have been some on Roatan, peaceful so far) What did you see?

Got off the Legend yesterday.  We did make our scheduled stop.  We were told by a t-shirt merchant that a peaceful protest was planned for the same afternoon.  We sailed at 3 and the businesses closed at 4 for the protest.  This way they could get their money from us and then go protest.  The island is beautiful.  I really hope that everyone who has booked on the Legend can go.

I'm still interested to hear if the ship is stopping and what you are seeing there. Has anyone seen any signs of trouble?

We just got back form our cruise on the Legend and we did stop in Roatan .. It was absolutly Beautiful !  No problems at all !  We booked our day at Fins and Flippers, you can find them online..  there was only 18-20 people on the island 1/2 mile away from the ship.. and it was like having your own beach and place to snorkel .. they had animals, and drinks.. we had a fantastic time , I would highly recomend Fins and Flippers to anyone traveling to Roatan .

    Hi Cruisers,

I just received an email from our property manager on Roatan near West End beach area.  The island is calm, there has been no changes with the exception of a curfew (doesn't affect cruisers) that was in place for about two weeks and is no longer active, so business is as usual.  There was a peaceful protest as mentioned in an earlier message comprised of local nationals as well as Americans resident on Roatan and Canadian resident on Roatan plus a smattering from other nations.

You'll love the island of Roatan - get off the ship and go have fun!

All the bad publicity from this government needed action is killing the tourism industry and it's such an awesome place.

I was on the Carnival Legend from March 21- 28th, '09. Our last stop was Roatan and it was so amazing! I could book another week long vacation just to stay there. We spent alot of time researching on CC and decided to do a Victor Bodden tour. It was the best tour we did! Our driver was waiting for us when we got off the ship and he was ours for the entire day for just $40. He gave us a quick spin around the island telling us about it and knew all the tourtists favorite places to stop for some amazing views and photo ops. Then we had him take us to west end bay beach. West end is the way to go. We went to the infiniti bay beach which is next to several others, its an amazing beach, very good snorkeling. We watched snorkeling excusions come and go while we stayed as long as we wanted, while our driver hung out on the beach for us. At the end of the day we found the peachish pastel shops right in front of the port are the best places to shop.

    Re: Roatan is a go!

Wow what a great place.  We also visited Roatan and loved it.  The Sandy Bay Marine Park is home to the dolphins at AKR and to a small resort we visited through our tour Guava Grove and The Oasis pool bar.  What a cool spot.  There was so many things to choose to do but we decided to get in as much as possible to see the island, we toured into West End and found many, many shops where prices were reasonable.  We took a water taxi to West Bay Beach for an hour just to check it out, the told us many people living on the island travel that way to the beach rather than staying on it as it is very busy.  Especially on cruise days.

How about it, July sailors? What did you see on the island? I assume the ship stopped. Are things still calm in paradise?

we just got back today and did get to go to Roatan on July 31st.  We were made aware that the teachers were holding a peaceful demonstration but we did not see anything and did a Best of Roatan Tour with Bodden Tours (great tour by the way).  So all was good this week.
