    Birth Certificate Question

So, we asked my husband's mother if she had a copy of his birth certificate. (She's one of these people who keeps EVERYTHING and keeps it organized). Anyways, she did have it. However, it is his ORIGINAL one. It was printed 6/30/1980. If it didn't have the raised state seal, I would think it was a photocopy.

My question is.....Will this be okay? We won't be questioned or harassed for having such an old document, will we? It is definately a real certificate of live birth.

You should be fine with that, however, I'd make a photocopy to have with you too just in case it gets lost.  When do you cruise?  If you have time, I'd really suggest getting a passport rather than carrying the original birth certificate.

We set sail on Saturday (4 days from now). So, it's too late for a passport.

We plan on sailing again in October, so we will definately have passports by then.

    Thanks!

I'm sorry! LOL I just feel over cautious holding on to something that his MOTHER has had all this time. It's kind of like it's sacred. LOL

BTW, you're not old by ANY means!

This is exactly the document you will need.  Any other document is a copy and is unacceptable. I do agree, however, to make a couple of copies.  They won't be certified, but will certainly help you in a pinch.  If you loose the original, you can always get another when you get back.  Make sure you take your photo id's as well!

An OLD document dated 1980?  My, you are young!  I just took my mom on a cruise and she had an original birth certificate from 1926.  I cruised with my daughter once and we discovered - to our horror - that she brought along a copy of her birth certificate, not the original.  They didn't say anything -- just looked at it, compared her driver's license and gave us our boarding passes.  However, I don't suggest using a copy!

    Re: Birth Certificate Question

It sould be ok. the reason you will need your birth certifiace is also to get on the boat and when you are reentering the country. or in case you get left by the cruise ship and have to fly home on a airplane. be sure to be back on the ship when they say or you will be left.
