    Currency exchange

On our cruise we are making 4 stops, all with differant currency. Do these places accept US currency or should we exchange before we try to purchace anything? The stops are Cayman Islands, Honduras, Belize, and Cozumel

US dollars and credit cards are generally not a problem in the Caribbean and Mexico.

If you use cash bring small bills. $1, 5 and 10's. Some island vendors will tell you they do not have change.

Most of the time it is not a problem!  Just remember that the Cayman Islands economy is better than ours so $1 CI equals $1.25 US so make sure to leave yourself some extra money for shopping in the Caymans!

    Re: Currency exchange

We were wondering this also. We are Canadian and are already bring american money but should we exchange some of it to the currency of each port. We are going to mexico,Jamaica and grand cayman .  Jamaica's dollar is lower than Canada's so should I try and purchase Jamacian money before our cruise? Does any of the ports take Canadian money?

    No need.

All Caribbean ports use US$ as a preferred form of currency.  And while some people will complain that you will get local currency in change, I have never, ever found that to be the case.  I want local currency as a souvenir stock-stuffer for the kids and I can't get it, even most of the time when I ask.  Over a dozen individual stops in Mexican ports and I can't score a single, lousy Peso.

You just need to buy Yankee dollars which, if I remember correctly, are a good deal for Canucks nowadays.

    Re: Currency exchange

I'd recommend the idea of sticking with one currency:  US funds, and the smaller bills, $1's and $5's will alleviate somewhat the problems with "sorry no change".  That's what we're doing, leaving from Saskatchewan on Janaury 7th, and sailing January 11th on the Conquest.  Everything else to purchase will be by one credit card as well.  Currency exchange fees can certainly add up, both when buying foreign currencies, and then later, if you just happen to have any left, buying back Canadian dollars.  Have fun on your cruise! Cool
    Cheers

Unfortunately, the Canadian Dollar isn't doing so well these days of economic chaos.  It will cost $ 1.2573 CAD Cdn to buy one $1 US.  Sad

    Cheers

Thanks for all the quick replies. I was planning on U.S funds but seeing as how our dollar is heading in the other direction, was wondering about the jamacian and the mexican dollar.I went to a exchange rate site and it said 1.00 Canadian =10.69 Mexico and  61.12 Jamaican .I guess I should of bought more American when our dollar was stronger.
