    Sea sickness meds free ???

I'm a bit confused -- does the ship offer sea sickness meds and/or wrist bracelet free of charge or will I have to pay for them?

I just returned form the 11/10 cruise on the Carnival Fantasy. When returning from our first port I noticed that hanging on the door to the medical clinic was a big bag of sea sickness meds. with a sign that said take if needed. I would suggest that if you think you will need them, take them before you leave port. It is my understanding that the meds. do no good if you are already sick.

The wrist deal is a placebo; if you believe it makes you not get ill, then you don't get ill.  I doubt they'd have those. ...for free, especially.

OTC motion sickness medications they certainly do have, and if you are actually ill then they'll probably give them to you.  ...based on the premise that for fifteen cents in free medicine, you'll feel well enough to buy another $6 drink for which they get $4.50 profit.

If you are not actually ill and simply want a bunch of free dramamine just in case, I believe you're going to be outta luck.

They have free sea sickness tablets (Meclizine) onboard. You can pick some up at the infirmary or at the Purser's desk. I take them everytime I cruise and they work very well. I've never heard of them handing out free sea sickness wristbands though.

No chance of that!!  They do SELL them in the gift shop for around $15 though,  I got one for my dd on our cruise and they didn't work - took them back and got credit for them (I put them all back in the box like they were when we opened it).

In case anyone wants to know the interesting things I just found [well, I think they're interesting]:

Motion sickness is cause specifically by a brain disconnect between how the ears and the eyes detect motion.  When the area of the brain whose job it is to reconcile various input data cannot figure out why the ears and eyes don't agree, it stimulates another area of the brain whose job it is to purge poisons [many of which cause such sensory disagreement], and it makes you barf.

Aren't you glad you know that?

This past summer my niece and her daughter went on the Ecstasy the day one of the hurricanes was kicking up....they woke up at 4:30 a.m. to rocking and rolling that lasted about 24 hours. Both of them had the wristbands on.....my great niece did not get sick and said she hated them because they dig into your wrist and hurt, my niece on the other hand wasn't as fortunate, she got very nauseated. Don't know if this helps you. A very good friend who cruises told my DH who gets seasick to take Bonine the night before you leave and continue to take it every night and to take ginger pills 3 or 4 times a day and you won't have a problem. We are going to find out if he is right or not on December 8! I sure hope he is Big Smile

rwilymz - you go guy... you rock! (as always)

To everyone else, yes, you can get meds on the ship but how do you know they will work for you?

Before you cruise, check with your doctor for recommendations.  Not everything works for everybody.  You should not count on the OTC on the ship.  My husband needs patches and wrist bands.  I do not need anything for the most part, but have wrist bands if I need them.  We also take a "paranoia" kit of all kinds of remedies for motion sickness just in case.  If we do not need them great, we take them home.  If we need them, we have them.

Don't wait until after you are on the ship - you are putting a bunch of money out for your cruise.  Put a little $ out there to be prepared before you go.

PLEASE KEEP THE PRIDE IN LONG BEACH!!!

Re: Sea sickness meds free ???

another thought we were on a ship in Feb and my husband was feeling a little motion sickness and someone told us to go to a bar and get some bitters and a gingerale you put a few drops of bitters in the gingerale and drink slowly. Sure enough he was feeling better in no time and we went on with our day. The bitters were free by the way Hope this helps.
