    what ruins are best?

I am trying to decide what ruins to go see in progreso.from what i have read Uxmal is the prettiest ,Dzibilchltun is the closest , and chichen itza is the main tourist sight not sure why. I think that chichen itza is 2 to 2-1/2 hrs drive one way. I don't really want to be stuck on a bus that long. Uxmal is 1-1/2 hrs drive not so bad. I can live with that. dzibilchltun is 15 min , but not as good as the other ruins form what i have read.

so just looking for peoples opinions what ruins to see.

My husband & I did the Chichen Itza tour & really enjoyed it. It is a 2 1/2 hour ride each way, but we had a great, funny tour guide who made it interesting. We also got to see alot of "real" Mexico along the way. The ruins are huge & are the ones you typically see on TV. I just hate that you can't climb on the ruins anymore (even though I understand why). It would have been fun to climb to the top of the pyramid. It is amazing to see what the Mayans did with primative tools.

I haven't been to the other ruins, so I can't compare. It all depends on what you want to do while you're there.

i have heard that chichen itza is the biggest. Everyone says that it depends on what my interests are. So my question is what are the interests at different sights? abvously Ch is the biggest, but what else is great about it over the others.. What about the other ruins. Thanks for your reply.

I have been to tulum which i thought was great. The ocean in the backdrop of the ruins what a sight to see.

Chichen Itza is the Mayan ruin.  It's the one used in the movies needing a ruin in the background; it's the one discussed in many of the documentaries dealing with the Maya and their calendar and their astronomy; it's the best preserved; it's got the serpent on the staircase on the equinoxes [I believe, maybe the summer solstice].  If you're a history/culture buff, then Chichen Itza.

    RWILY YOUR BACK...

    No, this is my front...

I find it depressing to babble about cruises when I'm not actually involved in planning one, or attempting to come down from the last one.  So I go away.

But I'm back to planning for the one we're taking my son/his bride on next July [their honeymoon, our anniversary] and so I'll be here until I have to leave again.

I agree that the pyramid built as a calender is awesome. The serpent during the solstice is awesome, and the movies being filmed the i don't care about that. The best preserved maybe so. The reason i am looking at the other ones is that in the videos i have seen all the carvings all over everything at uxmal, and the museum at Dzibilchaltun.

    Re: what ruins are best?

I am going on the fantasy cruise in November.  I had planned to take the Chichen Itza excursion out of Progresso.  However, after researching Uxmal; I have changed my mind and intend to take that excursion instead.  Even though Chichen Itza is the most known and popular; the info. I have read indicates that Uxmal is actually more beautiful and interesting.  Time will tell...........I am really excited to be able to see it soon.

I am also interested to hear what you have to say about Uxmal. My husband and I don't cruise until February, and I've been trying to make my mind up between Uxmal and Chichen Itza. I was considering the closer one (won't try to spell!), but after reading about some of the ruins, I think the choice is between Uxmal & Chichen now. Robztheman, don't forget to report when you get back!
