Any suggestions on what to do there?  we were thinking of the beach day but not sure what the weather will be like the end of September.   Not really interested in going to see the inside of the volcano.  Help??????

Taormina is worth a visit.  There's also a beach there.  The high temperature was in the mid to high 70's when I was there late September.

There is also a beach you can access below Taormina.

Thanks for the info.  I was doing some searching on the net and found a place called the Alcantara gorges near Taormina.  Do you know anything about it?  It looked really cool.

hi.i went to taormina in sicily as nothing really appealed to me.you can catch a bus from the ship at 70 us dollars per person which i found to be too pricey.i walked to the train station caught a train with my gf to taormina which cost 22 euros for 2 i think or very close.from here take the shuttle up the hill to taormina at 1.50 each.45 mins in the train 5 in the bus.you can walk from the train but trust me its a freakin mountain of everest proportions.at the top is the old greek theatre and a very nice view.if you take the freedom shuttle you will have 4 hours which i found 2 to be more than enough and by taking the train you can leave when you want.its really easy i dont speak italian at all.this is what i would do again if i went back.saves a lot of money.have fun!!
