Re: Passport for minor child without both signatures

Debbie, just went last week to apply for passports.  There is a big sign at the post office that states, both signatures no exceptions.  I did have a court document from the state of Hawaii but on there it doesn't state sole custody, so there might still be a problem with me getting my daughters passport.  The post office did send everything in, so I am hoping that everythings works out.  But I will let you know something Debbie.

It is so hard to get a passport for a child these days, even if you have the child 24\7 they still want signatures.  I know there was another lady on here trying to get a passport for her children, she never did let us now the outcome.

Well anyways, good luck and I will let you know.

Re: Passport for minor child without both signatures

My son is no longer a minor and has renewed his passport himself, but his first passport I got him with just my signature.  I don't believe that anyone even asked for the dads signature.  That was several years ago, befor 911 so the rules may have changed.  I do know that when he was about 14 his dad took him on vacation to Minnisota and they went to drive into Canada and the Border people called me  to see if my son could go with the dad.  Son is 22 now.  I would just try it and explain that you have sole custody or the dad is dead. What do they care?Devil

Re: Passport for minor child without both signatures

Well on the passport form it says that if you cannot get the other parents signature to please explain so I did that.  I tried contacting him three different ways and he just simply does not reply.  We already have a cruise booked for March and my son has traveled two other times with no problems, but it seems like they are getting more and more strict about the rules so I rather just have the passport.  I am going to apply and hope to get approved.  It just does not make sense why a custodial parent can't apply and get it especially for a cruise...I mean why would I want to live in a country I know nothing about.  If I was going to disappear it would be to Guam and heck I can fly there without a passport...LOL

Anyhow I am going to send it off August 1st for I decided to try one more time to contact the dad then it's just never mind.

Please do let me know the outcome of your situation and I will do the same.

Let's put this in the opposite direction. How would you feel if the noncustodial parent were able to wheedle or talk their way into getting your child a passport? What if they then kidnapped your child to another country? This has happened. As recently as this week 2 Syrian men ( brothers) took their children back to Syria to live. These rules are made to protect your children. They are not there just to be a hindrance. I do understand there are parents who disappear and also you may be a widow/widower. There has to be a way to get by this while following the rules.

When I went to apply for my daughter's passport, I was told her father had to accompany me not just sign the form. You need one signature if child is over 14. Both needed if under. I just waited until she was older since we were cruising after that. We did ger her father to sign a form provided by Carnival that said he gave permission for her to be on the ship and what dates we were sailing. He had it notarized. We never had to show it but had it just in case.

Good luck getting the passport. :)

Re: Passport for minor child without both signatures

Well children now have to be 16 to have a passport with one signature so we have another year to go.  His dad just doesn't feel that he should have to sign it...plain and simple it's not a matter of me taking off with him it's a matter of control and payback on his dad's part.  He hasn't seen him in over five years.

We have been on two cruises before with no problem, so I am not to worried would just like to get the passport so we have it just in case we have any problems.

Hopefully it works out for those of us whose other parent are not very cooperative.

I understand this situation with single parents. I just had this conversation with my hairdresser today. Her sister's son father refused to allow him to get a passport to go to a family wedding in Jamacia. I was able to get my son's passport processed because his father's name was not on the birth certificate. That was a blessing. I understand we can use our birth certificate w/state ID until June 2009. Single parents may have to voiced their concerns to the State Department. They have to know every child's parent is NOT available.

Well I have a birth certificate without his dads name; however, he pays child support so if they were to run a check they would find out that he does exist.  Anyhow....we will see.

Re: Passport for minor child without both signatures

Mayan Ruins     Debbie I had to do a lot to get a passport for my 14 year old grandson/son who I have had since he was three weeks old.  I had to get my son to sign and I had to look up his dead beat mother. Belive me it was a task I would have rather not have to have done. I filed on Monday Feb. 25 . With having to get the app. singed by both parents it took 48 days, one month, two weeks and three days. I sent my app. off on the same day and it can back on Sat March the 8 th . It only took me 13 days to get my passport back. I also get child support from both parents. I am the cust. parent. Good luck. I have a letter also that I will carry from both parents that states I can take him out of the country or state on vac. and seek medical attention. We will leave on Thur. Aug. 14 on Carnival Ecstay out of Galveston this is my grandson first cruise.once again I hope things will work out for you. Also if the father is not on the birth certificate you can get it with out a problen. My niece just got her son one with out any problem in 13 days. She was told at the post office after looking at the paper work that if his name was not on the certf. that she would not need him to sign, only a note signed and notarized stating he could go out of the country. His father told her to write it up and get it notarized. Let me know how things come out for you. I pray it will all work out and you get it without a lot of the run around I got.  Mimi

Re: Passport for minor child without both signatures

Thank you to those who have sent supportive messages.  I am giving the dad some more time to respond in hopes that I can do this the legal way.  I have taken my son on two other trips with no problems so hopefully my March trip will be the same.

I have a birth-certificate with just my name, but he pays support so it would show up.  Plus his name is now on the "current" birth-certificate.  I want to do what is legally right, but I want to take my trip too.  I am probably just causing myself more stress then what I need to....

My son went to China to visit family post 911 and we just had to write a statement that we couldn't reach his bio mom.  We didn't have any trouble, you just have to have a notorized statement.

Did you write the statement yourself and have it notarized?  Or did someone else also have to write this statement?

    Thank you!

I am happy to say , I received my son's passport today in the mail. We were very excited. Debbie, I encourage you to use the birth certificate until you van get the passport. However, I do understand your reason for getting a passport. To fly out of or into the country you need it. Good Luck
