We always purchase the cheap crock style shoes from Walmart and take them with us so that we can wear them in the water.  I am not sure about Cozumel or Calica as far as some of the things you can step on that are poisonous.  I used to live in Guam and we had stone fish so we always wore shoes in the water.  As for Cozumel I have never gone swimming there...but I am going to in Calica this next time.

Hi...sorry for the delay in responding...still unpacking tons of crap from our move.

The beach is mostly sandy with some rocks.  The kids played in the surf without their watersocks on and didn't suffer any cuts or any other issues.
