Question about Paradise cruise

We are leaving next monday on the 4 day cruise out of L.A.

First port is Catalina, my question is since Catalina is only 20 miles away from L.A., how does the cruise line work it out that you land @ port in the A.M.? We leave L.A. @ 4pm where do they sail to waste all that time. It doesn't take 16 hrs to sail 20 miles. Any ideas. Just curious....
