Hey rfender.............felt bad that no one had replied to your message, so here I am. My husband and I are also sailing on the Splendor Oct 17th. We're probably a lot older then you.  Maybe not what you would call a fun couple, but a friendly one. What a great cruise you chose for your 1st cruise. This will be my 12 cruise with carnival, so if you have any questions about them, I'll give you my honest opinion. Don't let my name scare you. It's a nickname my brothers gave me. I'm really a good natured grandma. Where are you guys from? We live in Texas, but not natives. Have you looked at the excursions? For us, it's a once in a lifetime trip and want to pick the right excursions. Did the Med cruise on the Liberty, so there will be a couple repeat ports which is fine, but have never been to Greece or Turkey.  Happy Sailing...............

Hey Wil-Da-Beast, thanks for the reply.  Sorry I have not returned before now.  Working lots to pay for trip.  My husband has been to Greece and the med way back when in the military.  I have never been.  We are origanally from Iowa but have traveled extensively with the military.  We love Texas, what part?  We lived around Fort Hood and Fort Bliss years ago.  Love San Antonio, my brother lives there now.  We are now in Minnesota, St Paul Area.  Really hate the winter.  I guess we are going to be the only couples on the Splender in  Oct. since no one else replied!.  We are going to spend a couple of extra days in Rome after the cruise.  We have yet to book that.  Can't wait to Sail.  See ya then

You might try cruisecritic.com for a roll call for your cruise.  Been on 7 cruises

and this is the first year I checked out Cruise Critic web site.  There are now

over 50 folks I am chatting with that will be on our Oct 4 Carnival Glory sailing.

We are planning a meet and greet Sun and have talked about just about everything

under the sun related to cruising.  You might also check a web site called

seauonboard.com.  It is an amazing site that gives first time cruisers answers

about everything.  have a great cruise.

Hi rfender.........it was great to hear from you and aren't you excited that finally other people replied and we won't be the only two couples. We met a couple from Indiana on our Alaska cruise and have taken 2 more cruises with them. We keep in touch and always ask about the next cruise, but they won't be on the Splendor with us. Just made our final pymt and now it's time to think about a few excursions. I know it's cheaper to do it on your own, but I feel more secure about being on a Carnival sponsored trip. Minnesota is a beautiful state, but I agree about the winters, but in Houston we have to deal with the awful heat and humidity in the summer. Don't work too hard saving up for your cruise........regards from Texas

    Re: Splendor Oct 17 2008

My wife and I will be on the 10/17 cruise.  We have already formed a group that are taking some private "tours".   I think I will prefer them as more flexibility with only a handful in the van.  We can stop along the way for a pic, a glass of wine, or whatever.  And usually at less cost.  Yes, we do plan to return to ship at least 1 hour prior to departure time to make sure we do not miss it.

Go to Cruise Critic Roll Call and sign in.  You can "meet others there" and join a private tour if you wish -- just let you wants be known.

We also will be on 10/17 cruise and would like to join small group to travel to Amalfi coast. We just started to plan trips and not sure what best way to see Istanbul. Do you have firm plans and reservations already?

Good to hear from you stewart, we already set up our port excursions through carnival.  We are first time cruisers and thought we were being efficient by booking all our excersion and getting them paid for. I had no idea that it would be easy to find others to set up group excursions.  We are really excited to be going and counting the days.  We are also spending 3 nights in Rome at the end of the cruise.  I have been reading all the blogs of what to take and have been shopping already.  I will probably have way too much stuff LOL!!  Looking forward to meeting every one.

Thank you for reply. We also will spend 3 days in Rome, need to talk more eoth you. Alkso on the day when we will stay in Civitavecchia, Oct. 28 we would like to go to Viterbo and Tuscia area for a day instead of going to Rome. I found private tour for small group there if we find people interested in doing that, or to share a car rent for a day and do it ourselfs. Anybody interested in joining us?

My husband and I just booked and we will also be joining you and many others on the 17th of October ... this will be our 4th cruise ... our first to the mediterranean.  We are very excited and hope to meet other couples as well.  We're from Vancouver, BC Canada.  I have been checking out the different excursion and they are quite pricey.  I tend to shy away from excursions not offered by Carnival for safety reasons, but was told not to worry.  Many of the locals are cognizant of cruise times and deliver on the commitment to return you to the ship ... I still don't know ... however would hate to miss out on seeing the wonderful sites.  It just seems that everything is adding up so fast ...well we hope to meet some great couples and we can't wait until we get cruising ...

    Re: Splendor Oct 17 2008

    Hi Everyone,

We are a group of 10 (my husband's family) going on the Splendour on Oct. 17th, we are from Montreal, GaspĂ©, and Nova Scotia.  My husband and I have been on 3 other Caribbean cruises, but this is our first one in Europe, and I can't wait!

We probably will do a lot of visiting on our own rather than taking the excursions, since we can save a lot that way, but there is so much to see and do, and with so little time, it really takes a lot of advance planning!  I have spent days already just trying to find a place for us all to stay in Rome pre-cruise!  We are also travelling standby, so that creates another headache, not knowing for sure exactly when we will arrive and depart,  but we are saving a lot that way also, since 2 of my brother-in-laws are retired airline employees.

Since this will be our first cruise with family, and 10 of us at that, we will have our own dining table at night and won't get the chance to meet as many other people on the cruise as usual, but we look forward to breakfast in the dining room with no assigned seating, we find we meet more people that way and have interesting conversation and insight from others before we start our day!  And who wants to grab "tray-food" at the buffet when you can sit down and have a nice breakfast served to you in the dining room anyway?  We find it's worth taking the extra half hour and being indulged!

    Bon voyage!
