    Triumph/Western Carribbean review

Just got back from a week on the Triumph and wanted to post a few thoughts.  First, we met up with some wonderful people we met on this website.  That made this the best cruise for my wife and I.  That being said, all of us that traveled wish to extend our thoughts and prayers to the family of one of our fellow passengers who's final hours ended on a sunny day in paradise aboard the ship.

Night before--With air travel as shaky as it is, I would not fly in the day of the cruise.  We travel from Omaha and this is the first time we flew in the night before.  It eliminates all the stress.  We stayed at the Airport Embassy Suites in Miami.  It is a beautiful hotel.  They have a 24 hour free shuttle from the airport (which is good since we arrived at MIA at 2:00 a.m.).  Free cooked to order breakfast and with AAA discount it was $123.00

Transportation to Pier--Unless you have a free shuttle to the cruise port, take a taxi.  It is about $25 from the airport area (not each--$25 for the ride).  We had four people and with the tip we paid $7.50 per person.  You don't have to wait for a bus to fill up or unload.  It was great.

Embarkation--We chose to carry on all of our luggage (and it was a bunch).  At first, we were told we couldn't carry on that much luggage.  Fortunately, I had a copy of the Carnival policy about carry on luggage and was greeted with a supervisor who quickly let us through before scolding the security agent that had told us otherwise.  Be prepared to stand in line and you will be fine.  We arrived at the pier about 11:30 and were on the ship just after noon.  Since we had our own luggage, we wanted to go straight to the cabin, but the doors to the living areas are closed with a sign saying no one is allowed in until 1:30.  This is a problem since we were toting all of  our bags.  I went through the doors and found our cabins to be clean and ready.  Just then, our cabin steward appeared and I asked him if we could bring our bags in to unpack.  He said, "no problem."  We were in our cabins and unpacked an hour earlier than anyone else.  However, carrying on the luggage was kind of a hassle and I probably wouldn't do it again.

The Triumph--This ship is headed for dry dock this winter, but I found it wonderful.  The ship is in great condition and the staff is excellent.  If you are looking for a rust spot or two, you will find it (but lighten up, she's been at sea for ten years).  It took me a half day to get acquainted with the layout.  Deck five spans the length of the ship and will get you where ever you need to go.

Pointers--Bring a hair dryer. The one in the room is funky.  There are no refrigerators in the rooms.  Bring a bucket if you want buckets of beer.  For some reason, they were not selling buckets of beer on the Triumph.  Bring extra hangers to hang up your good clothes.  Get up early on the days at sea.  If you want a deck chair in a prime spot, be there by 8:00.  Don't throw towels on chairs and then leave.  It is rude, and people will move them and take that chair.  Don't stress about what to wear at dinner.  People were wearing everything, and no one cared.  Expect to stand in lines at breakfast and lunch buffets.  Don't sweat it.  Eat breakfast a couple of times in the dining room.  The eggs benedict are great.  If you don't like your dinner, order a second (or third).  The staff wants you to be happy.  If something is bugging you, tell the staff and they will take care of it.

Food--The dinners were great.  Our servers were superior.  The lines at the breakfast an lunch buffets are a little annoying, but remember there are three thousand other passengers on board.

Entertainment--The comedians were very good.  We didn't care for the hypnotist.  Everyone we talked to enjoyed the production shows, but we chose other options after dinner.

Cozumel--We went to Playa Mia via taxi cab.  It is cheaper than the advanced excursions and faster.  At first, I was a little dissapointed.  I thought it was suppossed to be the party beach, but there was no partying going on.  Things picked up and we had a great time just relaxing and enjoying the all-inclusive beverages.  Eat something if you are going to be there for a while.  We did not, and paid the price.  Too mas cervezas.  Go on the banana boat.  It is fifteen bucks a person and it is great.  If you want an active day in Mexico, this is not your trip.  If you want to sit under an umbrella and enjoy cocktails, I recommend it.

Grand Caymans--Again we took it easy.  Took a cab for $5 per person to Sea Grape at 7 mile beach.  Don't go that far.  Take the $4 ride.  There is more going on there.  We walked what seemed like miles along the beach which is simply beautiful.  If you are more active, take any tour to pet the stingrays.  We did it last year and loved it.

Ocho Rios--We took a Phil Lafayette tour and enjoyed it.  It was different than I envisioned.  We thought Phil was going to be our guide, but apparently he has several busses.  The guides were great and we learned a bunch about Jamaica.  We had about 15 people on our bus and it was an overall good experience.  We were just hoping for a more intimate experience.  The tour took us to the Dunns River Falls ( a must see).  It is fifteen bucks a piece to get in.  We climbed the falls and bought the video.  It was super crowded, but still a blast.  Be ready for merchants to harrass you after the climb.  Then we drove around Ocho Rios and up to Fern Gully (rain forest).  It is a curvy path and I could have done without that part.  Next we went tubing down the White River.  We really enjoyed that part.  The fee is $20 per person.  It is only a little scary at times, but mostly relaxing and refreshing.  They dropped us off for shopping and took us back to the ship.  The tour itself was $20 per person plus tip.  For $55 each, we got to climb the falls, tube the river, see Fern Gully, and have a guided tour of Jamaica.  Plus, we didn't have to walk out of the pier area where the local merchants beg and hassel.

Debarkation--Get a late flight out of Miami and enjoy another half day on the ship.  Carry off your own luggage, and get off the ship after everyone has been called.  Enjoy a care-free breakfast in the dining room and walk around the ship and try to find something you hadn't seen or noticed before.  We had delays getting off, so there is no need to stress about an early flight out and have to wait in crowded stairways to get off the ship.

Overall, this was a fantastic cruise.  The weather was great, and the people we met were fun and friendly.  The food was delicious and the entertainment was good.  The staff was excellent.  Let me know if you have any questions.  Cheers,

    Jeff

Thank you for posting we are taking the same cruise in Feb. of 2009 and it just cant get here soon enough.  Your info on Ocho Rios was great and I will look into that tour.  We also like to hang at the beaches and relax.  My Daughter wants to swim with the dolphins in Cozemel so that will take up the early part of the day and we are just looking for what to do that evening at port. Glad you had a great time and I will be excited to find out what improvements to the ship will be done this fall.

My Daughter wants to swim with the dolphins in Cozumel .....

I suggest checking the dolphin tours at www.cozumelinsider.com.  Better selection and cheaper then booking directly with Carnival.

    Re: Triumph/Western Carribbean review

Thank you for the detailed information. Would you kindly give us more information on the difference between the $5.00 and $4.00 trip in Grand Cayman?  We are heading that way in a couple of weeks.

The $5 fare takes you to the far end of 7 mile beach to an area called Sea Grape.  The $4 rate takes you to the closest area (I forgot the name of it).

And Kathy, I'll let you explain the whole Funship Freddie thing. LOL.

    Re: Triumph/Western Carribbean review

Did my boyfriend and I go on the same trip? May 3-10th, Carnival Triumph to W. Caribbean?

Our experience was a bit different. We took an early morning flight the day of embarkation, flew into MIA at around 11am. We took the carnival transportation bus to the docks for $14/person. We had to wait, but it didn't matter -- we weren't in any major rush.

Embarkation Day: At the terminal, we went through security pretty quickly and easily. Inside, we checked in and got our keys very efficiently, though they gave us the wrong keys initially. We boarded the ship in time for lunch -- roughly 12:30pm. We were too early to drop our bags off in our room, but we packed very light and our bags weren't much of a hassel. Lunch on the Lido deck was disappointing not because the food was horrible but because the lines were too long and the deck/dining area too crowded -- it was difficult finding a table to eat at.

Days at Sea: Like our embarkation day, the ship during our days at sea felt very crowded. I've been on 2 other cruises and have never felt like there have been too many people on board. We stayed on an inside cabin and had difficulty knowing what time it was. It didn't matter, though, as we were more interested in resting and relaxing and definitely didn't want to get up on our "free" days. If you want a lounge chair by the poolside, you will have to claim one early, though. We enjoyed the sun, but weren't hard core sun bathers. We enjoyed the trivia and bingo sessions. We also spent our days at sea going to the "things to do/buy at the next port" talks. We didn't find Rudy's talks worthwhile. It felt too geared toward the high-end shopper (and as for the "freebies", they're exceedingly worthless -- I threw one of them away right as I got it). Plus, you can watch the talks on your TVs from the comfort of your own cabin (which, I must say is larger than most cabins on other ships).

Dining: Breakfast was the worst meal of the day -- if you don't mind waiting in line, go for the omlet. On port days, we chose to get the free room service just to streamline our mornings and get out with the maximum amount of time on land. Room service was always punctual. Lunches were standard fare, the lines were still long. The Thai food was reasonable, and the deli looked pretty good. We enjoyed the fries and all-you-can-eat soft serve ice cream.  Our first dinner on the Triumph, the host/maitre d' ignored us and then seated us at the wrong table. When we notified them, they removed us from the table and brought us to our assigned table. Dinner was always very slow for our table, but our servers were very nice and friendly. Each day, we'd order at least 2 desserts, each. They didn't always look like they were supposed to (i.e. the Tiramisu), but they were, overall, pretty good. Dinner was a little bland for me, but not bad for cruise food.

Cleanliness/Stateroom: I didn't really get to know our stateroom attendant well. I felt like they were always the little elves who turned down the bed and left the cute towel animals at night and kept our room clean. I do, however, really wish there was someone who cleaned the huge air vent next to one of the stairways in the main area on level 10. It was horrendously disgusting. Otherwise, I really don't have much to complain about. I think the upkeep of the boat could be better -- repaint the rusty parts, the decks to the lifeboats were painted during one of our port days, but really... it was closed off to the passengers except during an emergency, and i really won't care at that point if it's not varnished and glossy.

    Excursions:

Cozumel: we did the dolphin swim adventure at cozumel. It was fantastic! We loved it and would recommend it to everyone! Don't get duped by the cabbies who tell you they can take you on an island tour. We were in Cozumel for Cinco de Mayo, but don't be fooled -- the locals didn't do anything special for it. The shopping wasn't all that impressive. we didn't enjoy all the store employees yelling at us trying to get us to go into the store.

Cayman Island: This is the one place we're looking forward to returning. We had a fantastic time snorkeling and swimming with the stingrays with Moby Dicks tour. The water was clear, the stingrays friendly, and we even saw a sea turtle on the ride back to the docks from stingray city (it was swimming at the top of the water... totally unexpected!). Unfortunately, we had to take tendered boats to and from the ship and dock, and we would've liked to spend more time ashore.

Jamaica: I would not go back to Jamaica with Carnival. We docked at their import/export docks for sugar and the like. It smelled awful, the ground was sticky, and it just looked run down. We did, however, see another Carnival ship docked at the nice dock near all the shopping. In fact, on our way back to our dock from the shopping area, one sketchy guy on the side of the road called to us, opened his hand with a gold chain in it, and tried to sell it to us. SHADDY! After we got off the ship, we met up with Peat Taylor Tours -- we really didn't know where to meet him when we first got off, but we asked one woman who was helping to get people to the right area, and she immediately knew where to take us and escorted us to a group of people waiting for Peat Taylor. The tour was good, and we saw everything we wanted to.

Odds and ends: The ship crew wasn't as helpful as I had expected or come to expect on cruise ships. Our first day, the safe was locked, and they were hesitant about sending someone up in a timely fashion to help us open it. I had to be persistent and pester them until they found someone and sent them to help open the safe. Then, when there was some confusion about where to meet one of my tours -- it was at a hotel, and I was trying to find the hotel and how to get there (not booked through Carnival), I called the purser's desk to see if someone could help me. The woman said she didn't know Ochos Rios, and that she couldn't help me. She said there was nothing she could do. I had to ask her if she could help me call the tour in the morning if she wouldn't help me find the hotel. I was so upset with the unfriendly staff.

Debarking: We waited like good little children in our cabins until our number was called... except that no one else was following the rules. We ended up leaving before we were called... we went to the debarkation talk, we even talked to the staff afterwards, and they assured us we were going to get off on time. Just a word of advice, take a late flight... even if it means you're going to take a connecting flight and get home at midnight.

Phew. I think that's it... for now. Overall, I don't think we had an awful time. we had an ok time, but having gone on other cruises, it wasn't up to par. I wanted at least a HELPFUL staff and a CLEAN ship, and I feel they dropped the ball on these two aspects.

    Re: Triumph/Western Carribbean review

Wow!   I'm getting real nervous about the long lines for meals. My last and only cruise was on the Celebration. It was a smaller ship and during rush hour, there were about 20 to 40 people on line for meals. How long of a line are we talking about on the Triumph?
