    Roatan Island, Honduras Shore Excursions

Hi we are travelling on the Valor July 20, 2008 and just wondering if anyone could recommend a shore excursion for us....we are traveling with our two sons 21 and 19 and just looking for some suggestions.  On the list of excursions for this port (Roatan Island), nothing is really grabbing our attention, so I just wanted to see if anyone had some ideas

    Thanks

We just arrived home yesterday from the same itinerary you are planning. It is an incredible trip. We enjoyed the snorkeling trip very much over the Barrier Reef. We had never snorkeled before and it was wonderful. And in Belize, the Cave Tubing was amazing. Hope your trip is as wonderful as ours was.

Which tour did you take?  Can't decide which snorkel trip to do in Roatan.  We are sailing June 8 on the Legend. Thanks.

    Hello fellow cruisers,

We did the Tabayana Beach excursions and took the snorkel gear with us. My friends went right into the water from the beach and saw a bunch of fish. The beach is great. It was the last stop on our last cruise there and we just wanted to relax on the beach.

Boys that young are likely adventurous and thrill-seekers.

    Hi Laura:

We are going on the Valor Oct 12-19, and like you I wasn't sure about Roatan Island. However, I have read tons of cruise reviews (check out cruisecritic.com, choose the Valor and you will see tons of great reviews to this Western Itinerary).

One woman wrote about Gumbalimba Park. She said her pictures looked like something out of a Corona commercial. Since I am a photography nut...this is right up my alley. She said there is a fresh water pool, canopy zip line tours, botanical garden, pirate adventure, authentic cooking, moneys, tropical birds, snuba, beaches & shopping.

I am looking into this seriously, so if anybody reading it has anything to add, I would love your suggestions as well!

Anyone else planning on doing the Dolphin Encounter here? I know a lot of people do it at other ports, and I'm planning on doing it in Roatan Island. Anyone else have any experience with it?

Me, drinking an amazing Pina Colada!

Just back today.  Gumbalimba park is a tourist trap!  There is 1 monkey who is semi-social.  The rest run away.  The parrots, for the most part, are caged.  The pirate cave is man made and not Disney quality, if you know what I mean.  The beach isn't much.  The pool is nice.  The scenery is nice as well.  I can tell you I was angry at spending $220 for 4 of us.  It does look nice in brochures and photos, but they only show a small part of the "park".

We just got back July 19th and did the clear kayaking, snorkel, and Gumbalimba Park. My family members age 2- 58 all had a great time! The coral reef is absolutely beautiful there. And although I do agree that one monkey was not quite so social, they still came down from the trees to play with us (o-kay, steal anything loose on us!).
