    Roatan

Does anyone have any information on Roatan?  I know it's an island of the coast of Honduras, but what are the things to do there?  Looking forward to seeing since it is a place I have never been, but interested in what you thought of the place.

    Re: Roatan

    Hi carnicruiser,

I was on the Legend last October and Roatan was a replacement port due to Hurricane Dean taking out Costa Maya. I have to tell you, it was one of the best ports I've ever been to. It's a fairly new port and hasn't been commercialized yet, but the island is beautiful. We caught a taxi and went over to Tabayana Beach for the day and it's one of the best beaches I've ever been to. If you get a chance, check it out. You can even snorkle from the beach or rent a sea kayak and paddle out to the reef which is like looking in an aquarium. The actual port itself isn't much, but there are a few shops to buy trinkets..... The best day of our cruise by far.... .here is a picture I took at Tabayana.... Have a great cruise!!

    Happy Sailing!!

    Hi Carnicruiser,

We have been to Roatan and are headed back again in Jan 2009. We just did Tabayana Beach to relax because it was our last stop. Some of our friends that also went to Tabayana beach took their snorkel gear and just walked off the beach to snorkel. My friends said it was some of the best snorkeling they have done where you just walk into the water and see fish.

I heard that they may be heading back to Costa Maya this summer since the port has been fixed from the Hurricane.

    Hi Lynnie,

Your correct. The ships that went to Costa Maya before the hurricane will start going back there sometime this November or December. The ships going out of Tampa still go to Roatan if your interested. I hope this helps you some.

We are going on the Legend out of Tampa on November 23rd and it is listed as going to Roatan...... since the advertised itinerary includes Roatan, it won't change -- will it?

    Hi Luv2cruz,

You will be ok because you are on a ship that goes to Roatan each week. The only way something would change is if there was major storm damage like what happened to Costa Maya. The other ships like the Glory will change because Costa Maya was a stop and when it was damaged by a hurricane Roatan became a temporary fill in.

My husband and i went with some of our friends last year to roatan and we also went to the beach it was so nice but make sure that you do not get riped off by the taxi drivers because they will charge you more if you let them also make it clear where you want to go or they will take you to other parts of the island that you did not want to go and it will cut out your time at the beach. This happend to us and the dirver took us to the other side of the island which took an hr. out of the time we could have spent at the beach. It is a beautful place to go you will have a great time!

We just got back a few weeks ago from a week long dive trip to Roatan.  It is a beautiful place with very nice people.  The monkeys are really friendly too!  ;-)  If you are into Diving then this is the place to do it, we did some awesome dives including a shark dive!

    Re: Roatan

My husband and I just got back from our carnival legend cruise that included roatan, honduras.  It was by far my favorite port!  It looks like a very poor island and yet it is beautiful.  We did the Birds, Pirates and Monkeys excursion.  It was awesome, you actually get to have McCaws and monkeys sit on your shoulders.  It was an incredible experience.  I actually had my hair braided there too after our excursion was over.  Honestly I would love to go back there.  There is also some neat information the tour guide told us.  There is absolutely no traffic laws there, you can go as fast as you want and park wherever you want.  There were actually vehicles parked in the middle of the road as well as on sidewalks.  The shopping there is a little different than what i'm used to.  You have people there constantly asking you to buy from them.  I actually had a woman grab my arm and pull me to the side wanting to fix my braids for me.  I just paid 40.00 to have them done and she wanted me to pay another 10.00 so that she could make the top ones smaller.  I didn't let her do it though cause it hurt the first time and didn't feel like going through it again lol.  Other than that though I absolutely loved Roatan!!!

Roatan Island, Honduras is about 40 miles off the Northeast Coast of mainland Honduras. The Island is 4 miles wide & 36 miles long. I has great wildlife so take a wild life tour and it has a great beach.
