Want to know if anyone has ever been to this country!

My husband and I are booked for a cruise on the Freedom on 7/24/07. I want to know if anyone has ever been to Croatia and what is it like!

    Spike,

I was there last year when we travelled to Greece. It is a very nice, very old city, with a beautiful wall that surrounds it. Take in the sights if you want, or just walk along the wall, for a price of course. I went to the Island of Lokrum, a beautiful forest preserve just off the mainland of Debrovnik. The Island use to be a housing location for orphin children and nuns. In Debrovik, I went to the local market and bought some very large cherries, and took them back to the ship. Even though it is Croatia, many of the stores still accept the Euro, so do not worry about that. Well, enjoy your trip.

Thanks for the information Mark. I really appreciate it. My husband and I are history nuts so it sounds like it's up our alley.  We are so looking forward to our cruise.

My husband and I took a Mediterranean cruise aboard the Liberty last September.  One of the stops was in Dubrovnik.  We wondered before the cruise why they would stop in Croatia of all places??!!! Now we know!  It was the nicest surprise of the whole trip!  It's a beautiful old city with friendly people, and very pretty mountainside sights.  The tourguide took us up the mountain to eat lunch at a local villager's home - we had homemade wine, homemade bread and dried ham and dried figs - all delicious!  You'll be very pleasantly surprised, I promise!

Old town Dubrovnik is absolutely beautiful.  We were there on a nice sunny fall day so the sky was blue, the water was bluer than the sky, and the terra cotta roofs were just brilliant orange.  There is an ATM just outside the city walls and many more in the city itself if you like to get some local money to use instead of Euros.  We took the shuttle to the city and bought our ticket to walked the city wall (which encompass the old town).  Be sure to keep the ticket since about half way through you have to show your ticket to a person in a booth and he/she will tear off another section of the ticket.

Others from the cruise (we were on the Liberty last year) went to the countryside excursion and they loved that too.

Went to Dubrovnik with Liberty last September and then again with Freedom just a few weeks ago.  Beautiful city.  Walk the walls (about 3km with great views out to sea and into the walled city), eat at a local restaurant, try the ice cream, go for a swim (lots of spots "in town" - all easily done.  If you have never been before plan to stay in town and save the excursions for another time. The streets are paved in white marble and glisten in the sun.

Agree with the OP's; Old Town Dubrovnik was quite an interesting place to visit; it was pouring rain the day our ship stopped there (late October), but we went all through the old stone city just because it was so interesting!

Yes, my daughter and I was on the Carnival Freedom last summer for the European cruise. Croatia was our third stop, and was it marvelous.  The water is the clearest, crystal blue.  The  "Olde Town" has spectacular streets and views of the ocean as well as the countryside.   As we pulled into port that day I was in awe of the beauty of the area.  The houses and buildings that you see with the red topped roofs, and the water.  I could go on and on about the area and the Adriatic sea, but you will have to experience it for yourself. I would go back  in a heart beat if someone would go with me. Of all the stops we made this was my favorite.  I hope you enjoy!
